Had a great (but way too short) trip to BOQ this past weekend. And of course, had a blast at the Perfect Vue. I thought I would share my experience and get your input.

It's been many a year I have been a dedicated Fire Line user on BOQ, but I think those days are over. Went out on Saturday morning and kept watching others pull 'em in one after another while my livewell lay empty. The bait... the spinner... hmmmm... not a chance they were the cause.

After one heck of a fish fry on Saturday (TY Fatman and the others at PV) and a few pops, I realized it must be something else. So I headed out on Sunday morning using another rod armed with Fluorocarbon line and the same spinners. The results were devastating! Two decent walleye, two drum, a real nice northern, and even a LM bass in a matter of an hour. The other had their share of action as well.

Was it dumb luck? In years gone by I might have said yes, but I'm not so sure right now. So off with the Fire Line and long live Fluorocarbon for me.

Later,

What on earth is fire line? Flurocarbon is only used for leaders.

as a fly fisher, I'll use fireline as a tippet on the end of my leader if I'm going after gar or pike, other than that, I use flourocarbon tippets for almost everything else, especially for brown trout in the creeks, since they are very wary of anything.

stanley20footer, fireline is made by berkley, it almost looks like very braided rope, as far as I know it just comes in smoke colour, it's extremely tough, hard to cut through, really good for "toothy" fish.

Stanley20footer, flouro is not only used for leaders. I have 4 of my trolling reels filled with Berkely Transition. That being said, I also have 4 reels with Fireline. I will also be using Transition for jigging this summer

Braided line with a fluro leader is the way to go. Both lines have very little stretch and the flurocarbon is invisible.

Mike,

I used the Fire Line / Fluorocarbon leader last year, and I agree it works well. Do you tie a knot for the leader or use a barrel swivel? I am not sure of a reliable knot for this combo.

What is simply amazing is just how visable Fire Line is in clear water.

Susquinola,I always use back to back uni knots to attach leader to my Fireline. I do NOT use a swivel as that would mean my leader could only be about the length of my rod as I wouldn't reel the swivel through the rod eyes. I will sometimes use leaders of 50'.

I tried the 6 lb Iron Silk last year and found there were times I had a lot of break offs. Even when tying the knot it would break. Almost like it got brittle or there were nicks in it I couldn't see. Anyway, it cast like a dream but I didn't trust it after awhile and replaced it. The old trusted but proven Trilene mono or power-pro braid with fluorocarbon leader is my staple now.
