I personally filled my 30 size reels with 30lb mono backing and then 300yrds of braid. I've never had a king go 1000feet although I'm sure it's possible.

Are you running dipsy's?

Yes I do. Scott and Steve def have more experience than me just saying if money is an issue Usually have between 150-190 feet out for a size 1 dipsy then fish could take a huge run. I also ran my rigger rods with 150 feet of 30lb big game and braid behind that. As I cut the mono off for fall eyes.

I would be curious to hear why guys are putting so much line on the reels though? I realize the counter works better when the reel is full, is that the only reason, or is it in case of fowl up/break

That 50 lb salmon is out there somewhere and that would be the time it would foul up or break. :D
But also the amount of line on the spool will affect how fast you can reel in. The more line on the spool, the bigger the diameter, the more feet reeled in per turn of handle. When trolling deep water and there's lots of line out there, it makes a difference. All linecounter reel manufactures recommend filling the spool as they are more accurate when full for this same reason. Some may remember the math from an earlier thread on this.

i look at it this way.

250' - 300' out to start.

then a good king will pull another 600' of line - quite easily.

so now we are at 850' to 900'.

never would I consider a break point (a knot) around that area.....

we spend a lot of money on our fishing tackle (and boats and gas and and and)....so for me to fill up a reel with 50lbs braid (in bulk, at a tackle shop, power pro, usually when the tackle shop has their spring sales) ...

each to their own....

Well, I have the 30# on with mono backing for now. I'm concerned with the mono rotting after the year so I will come up with a better solution for next year. It will do for walleye and back lake trout for now. I'm going to upgrade to either 50# PP or 30# 7 strand steel line for salmon... I cannot wait!
