I would like to start this post to get information on deep open water trolling for walleye in lake ontario . I have been trolling Port Burwell and Port Colborne on lake erie for a number of years and have seen a lot of success .
Can anyone tell me if the same techniques and patterns will work in lake O . I will be concentrating my efforts around Scotch Bonnet out of Brighton . I have fished in this area a few times for salmon so Im not completely new to the area .
By techniques I am talking about planner boards jet divers and worm harnesses , Deep diving plugs like reef runners rapalas .
I will post my findings as I get out throughout the summer . Anybody targeting walleye in the deeper parts of lake O please join in with any info .
I am also very familiar with the migratory fish out in Picton . Im not really interested in that area because its more fall and winter . Im manly inquiring about the summer months and open water walleye .

Talk to Al Vandusen ( Trannyman ) if you would like to know the program that works in that area , he would be the resident expert , i know he has landed some world class eye's in the summer months out there :D

I too am interested in this topic being from Amherst Island, I know fishing heats up late summer on the shoals, but where the big boq eyes go during the dog days has always been a mystery to me, I have world class smallmouth fishing right out my doorstep to keep me occupied during this period, but have always wanted to catch big walleye all season long, also this is my first post, this is a fantastic forum, have been reading for a few years now, slipped out after work Thursday evening, launched at Sherman's and caught a quick 4 fish limit of 2-3 lbs's from the launch to ram island staying in that 12-15ft of water range, using a lindy no snag ounce and half sinker and the new Lindy lil guy with a crawler, been a hot combo for me all season so far.

As Bill ( trophy hunter) said, Trannyman would be the man to message on that

Summertime lake Ontario isn't too different than Erie.

You'll be fishing slightly shallower, and you'll be fishing more structure than open water, but you'll be pulling core with worm harnesses while covering water...then once you locate the schools move towards stick baits to find the bigger girls.

Lots of time covering water will be needed, but focus on the structure and pull those harnesses...

Watch a couple episodes of Fish TV. Our very own Jeff Chisholm has been running that show lately....He has done some amazing lake ontario trolling episodes for walleye on Lake Ontario ... you'll see the shallower aspect of it...as he also runs into muskie and smallies along with the walleye.

Ok thanks walleye master, not that I'm about to ask for coordinates or anything like that, but when you say structure, are you referring to shoals, points, islands, big mid lake flats that aren't necessarily shoals, all of the above lol, just looking for some guidance on how to get started, so I can try and put together a working recipe for some success. Thanks again.

I am also interested in trying Lake Ontario for summer walleyes. I have watched fishing shows on the other great lakes where they catch large eyes trolling td7 and 9s in the summer but not many shows from Lake Ontario. Normally I spend the summer chasing eyes north of 7 and then hit Bay of Quinte in the fall. So if anybody has additional info. on this topic I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

The number of eyes off the Bonnet is not comparable as to the eastern basin. I have a had great days in the fall, upwards to 15 eyes in a day and most over 8 pounds. I have had zero days also. All depends on how the bait moves up and off the shoals. I usually never target them until mid September and later. I have marked them lots of times while fishing kings in mid summer on the big shoal.

Another shoal is Wicked Bank, where I have also done well but again a hit and miss type of place.

I never have the walleye baits in the boat in the summer while fishing kings. You can only get so much gear on a boat at one time. :) :)

If you want to find out more, give me a call after 6 pm in the evening and I will tell all I know.

So.....Im getting a feeling that if you were to target walleye in the summer. Wasting time fishing open water probably isn't the way to go . On lake ontario of coarse .
one would be better off to target the shoals and target the fish that way .
Has anyone ever targeted the shoals just outside Brighton bay ? I tried 3 years ago for smallmouth bass with no success . I did catch some salmon though between the shoals and Nicolson Island .
Just a note . I have added to my boat a Hummingbird 999 SI and after 4 weeks of using it I am blown away . I think this will help finding schools of fish in the open water a lot easier .
As i said I will post how the search goes as I get out there in the summer months .

I target walleyes off Pigeon Island and East Charity Shoal starting in early August. It can be hit and miss. I have been skunked but I have also had days limiting out on 6-13 pounders (mostly released). Somewhere in between is the norm. I fish planer boards with deep diving plugs and downriggers down 15-40 ft. fishing over 30-90 FOW. Also whenever I am Lake Trout or salom fishing in the trench south of Amherst island I often run a flat line with a deep diving plug of some sort. Nearly always boat 1 or two nice walleyes. They are there but fairly scattered. As water temps climb bait fish start gatherting around shoals and the walleyes start concentrating. I have also boated some pretty nice salmon while I have been targeting walleyes. Interesting thing though most of the boats in these areas are American charter boats. I see very few Canadian boats out there.

That's awesome information bowhunter, I wonder why you don't see many Canadian boats out there? Also what is the trench south of Amherst Island you are referring to? I was on the Navionics website looking at the map and cant seem to pinpoint where the trench might be located??
