Hello,
I hope that some of you ice fishermen can help me decide or start a discussion on what portable drill to use to cut an 8 inch hole.
Should it be a hammer drill? 18 or 20 V? Will 18 (cheaper) do the job for perhaps 8 holes? Should torque be an issue?
What is the best drill at the right price?
Thanks to everyone.

Ridgid. hands down... buy the drill, register and it get a life time warranty. in the past 3 years my chuck was chewed up 1st year (before clam attachment), fixed by ridged, second year switch malfunctioned which fried both batteries, fixed and both batteries replaced by ridged. third year no issues other than misplacing the bolt that holds the chuck on, replaced for free by tool repair shop in kingston. all free. Will never have to worry and never need to buy another for life. Ridged has a repair depot in Kingston (ABA tools) so no need to ship away, couple days turn around for repairs. About to start the 4th year. ill find my old post and repost them.

here are some old post, this discussion comes up year after year. Not sure if they are all here but if you look through my old posts you will see more if there are any. as for the hammer drill question big NO, mine is a hammer drill but you don't want to use that function. Slow and steady, cuts a hole like a spoon in butter. If you can afford to pick up the clam drill attachment it is well worth it. I got mine at Sail in oshawa. Saves your chuck and wrists from wear and tear. Check out youtube for videos on it.

Why not to use the hammer drill setting:

here are new links incase any of the old ones don't work.

Clam demo on youtube

Clam attachment and extention (i bought mine at sail) my extention was a no name brand at sail for $8. keeps the drill away from water and saves the back lol.

My Auger:

Drill kit I have (kit came with a radio when I bought it)
https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.18v- ... 42190.html
EDIT: THIS DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME BATTERIES AS MINE. IT SEEMS RIDGED CHEAPED OUT. THIS HAS 1.5AH BATTERIES MINE CAME WITH 3AH BATTERIES.
Here is a link to the product on the US site I actually bought but don't see it on CDN site. Even this has the smaller batteries...
http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-X4-18 ... /203810442
Seems they are misleading and manipulating consumers now. If you look through some of the product pictures they hide th AH symbol strategically.
There is one on the product that is just the stand alone hammer drill that shows the 4AH battery in a picture of someone using it but the descriptions say comes with 2AH battery. (https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.18-v ... 51122.html).
The whole marketing behind the 2X, 4X and now 5X is the run time, meaning 2, 4, and 5 times the run time.
Guess I lucked out a couple years back as I only paid around $235 for the whole kit with 2X 3AH batteries

Newer models brushless drill kit (more torque, but not needed) Ive never had an issue with mine.

Thanks Walleye for your assistance. Your reply was very helpful. I researched the net and dropped into Home Depot and after careful consideration I purchased the Dewalt Heavy Duty 18 V cordless compact hammerdrill. It comes with two chargers and cost me or shall I say Mrs Clause $240.
I can't wait to give it a go but it will not be on the Hammer setting. :P
