Rookie question
Was out looking at ice of the town dock, large crescent shaped section of rough ice from last weeks break up, the ice was pushed down from the bridge by the strong winds, we have good black ice near shore, the bay has refroze past the broken stuff, before we head out any thoughts as to safety and stability of the refrozen "pack ice " we are very cautious have spuds, float suits and trail ropes.
Doe that stuff refreeze "solid" or is it going to unstable for the winter?
There have been a couple of groups out the last few days, no one has ventured over or past the rough section.Just asking for thoughts from the more experienced.

always a risk on any ice when its -15 ice much different than when its +5 2 inches of hard black is stronger than 4 inches of white so cant always look at thickness . you can always trust your spud. and use common sense. honeycombed ice on a warmish day can be some of the most dangerous ice known to man........on a day when its -20 and water saturated its pretty well locked up of course your spud will tell you what you need to know .

Was out for a couple of hours this afternoon, good clear 5-6" of ice till you hit the broken up refrozen pack ice, test one section between the floes and only 2" of ice, didn't venture any further, fished in 9' of water lots of perch.
Concerned that for this year, that broken up section of ice will prove to be a barrier to getting further out from town dock may have to get in car and go off Mill street of try other areas of Bay.

That broken ice is real risky, especially near Deseronto. There's a strong current that comes down Telegraph Narrows and around Foresters Island. The black ice is OK because you can follow the thickness recommendations for that. The broken re-froze stuff is anyone's guess. I stay clear of it.

Be very careful anywhere around the north side of Foresters Island or the Skyway Bridge strong currents can erode the ice from underneath.
