Have fun, be safe, catch a tagged fish and win the tournament. Remember the MNR and OPP and coast guard will all be out in full force so make sure you have all the required safety equipment for your boat http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/tp ... t-3018.htm

Thanks Dan, Best to all.

Went to Watertown yesterday to replace the expired flares on the boat. Got em at Wal-Mart for under $20(US) for four, need six, so bought two packs.

In Canada they are priced out of sight.

Yes...good luck everyone and stay safe.

Wow! That's a great price compared to Canadian prices.

The ones I bought at Can. Tire a few years ago expired after 2 years. I didn't see the exp. label until it was too late but replaced them already.

Cheers

Hey guys,

Have you figured out who will dispose of your expired flares? I have so many in my house I am afraid if I ever have a fire, my house will vaporize.

Take them to your backyard and have a fireworks display.

I was at Marine Outfitters and asked about disposal. Their supplier takes them back one for one.

I shot my old ones into a snow back last winter. The trick was standing back about 20 ft so they have a chance to ignite before hitting the snow.

Worked well.

I believe it is illegal to fire flares off, perhaps in a snow bank, but shooting them into the sky is a nono.
I used to get rid of them thru the Power Squadron in Kingston but missed their cutoff, now i have 16 to get rid- think I'll contact local police dept and see what they will do.
I'll write back here to advise of what happens.

Sometimes the local fire department and or police marine unit will hold a demonstration day/night. Explaining the use of fire extinguishers and also how to properly hold your flares while trying to ignite them.

Why is everyone concerned with flares? For lake ontario? Wouldn't have thought the bay of Quinte was over 3.7 kms wide at any point. Big Bay maybe I guess. Better get some flares! (new boat)

Not 100% sure, but I think it depends on the size of your boat whether you need them or not. Check the link above that Dan posted.
