Hi guys ordering a new boat and wondering if anyone has thoughts or reviews on the units I’m considering for the cockpit. Being a Humminbird user for many years I’ve decided to try Garmin on my new boat. Not sure if I should get the GPS map 8612xsv or the 1242xsv. Both similar in price just looks like higher resolutions with the 8612. Will be useing for salmon and walleye as well as smallmouths.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience on pros and cons for either units?

I have the Helix 10 on my boat now but just ordered the Garmin 942xs for the front of my boat because it is compatible with livescope. It is on sale right now for $999.00 at Radio World.

I was told Garmin all the way, side by side on the big lake the Garmin was marking fish that the other graphs weren't picking up. Again, I was told this... I know if I order a boat or get new graphs they'll be Garmin. Also was informed that they are the easiest to use and learn.
Maybe someone else can confirm.

I've been running Garmin units for the past 3 years. My first two sets of units were GPSMAP 7612's and 7610's. The 7600 series were replaced last year by the 8600 series. These are great units but have a lot of bells and whistles on them that we really don't need, they're really meant for off shore ocean use. And due to the bells and whistles the price reflects.

Last year I ran the brand new Echo Map Ultra Series units - 102sv (10") and 122sv (12"). These units are awesome, provide everything you would need for the fishing you've described and have the new easy release cradle system as well a key assist which is really nice to have when running the boat. These units support Livescope, HD Clearvu and Sidevu. Best of all these units are 2/3's the cost of the 8600 series units.

I'd be happy to talk more about the units if you'd like. I got them from High Falls Outfitters in Belleville.

Hi Jeff thanks for the info. I a, also leaning your way with the 122sv in the console and two echo 102 sv’s on the bow. One with the pan optics the other I am hoping can run off the universal transducer on the ultrex. Do you know if that unit is combatable? Also not sure what transducer to run at the console as that unit does have chirp as well as clear view and side imaging and again I want that unit to be better for walleye and salmon fishing but also have the option to drop the trolling motor in the water and sit at the console useing the remote for the ultrex and use it to point pan optics around. My back is getting worse so want to have my new set up as comfy as possible. Would love to chat in case I’m missing anything else. I have been a bird user forever so Garmin is new to me and most of my buddies are running Lowrance or birds.

Echomap Ultra 122sv (x2)
- Transom Mount transducer -GT34UHD-TM
- In Hull Transducer - GT15M-IH

Jeff, I just got an 8612 and 8610 with Panoptix, if you don't mind I'd like to reach out to you as well and pick your brain on how some of it works. You can only watch youtube so much... lol
