Looks like Conservation Officers were on the job and we're glad they are.

Got this from the "Fishing Network"

NEW: FINED $1,250 FOR ILLEGAL FISHING AND FALSE INFORMATION
Spiel -- Thu, Jun/1/06

May 23, 2006

BELLEVILLE - A non-Aboriginal man who was seen spearing walleye during a First Nations spear fishery and then denied it has been fined $1,050.

Garnet Duetta, 40, of Newcastle, was fined $500 for unlawfully possessing a spear and $750 for giving false information to Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers.

Court heard that on April 11, 2006, Lake Ontario Management Unit conservation officers, monitoring the Aboriginal spear fishery, saw two people spearing walleye. When approached, Duetta claimed he had not been fishing. He only admitted having a spear after officers beached his vessel and found one that had been hidden.

Justice of the Peace Fred Ross heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Belleville, on May 16, 2006.

Non-Aboriginal persons must follow the provisions of the Ontario Sport Fishing Regulations and cannot take part in a recognized Aboriginal right on behalf of or with Aboriginal persons.

Call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free anytime to report a natural resources violation or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

It's always good to hear that violators of the regulations are being dealt with. I am sure we just hear about the occasional offender, there are probably many more about....Larry

go to know they are out and watching, even the OPP were out one day when I was fishing trout in a creek, they have the power to enforce the regs as well. 8)
