Make sure your flares are up to date, mine expired March 2022, new ones coming end of the month, ready for walleye season.

Those dang flares are expensive here too. If you have a friend going across the border see if they can PU some there much cheaper. Mine are now up to date but last season they werent

Looking at the flare requirement rules, is it correct to assume anyone operating their motor boat on Lake Ontario must have flares because they could be more than a mile off shore?

That being said, does this apply to those smaller motor boats (under 19.8 ft) operating only in the Bay of Quinte?

Flares have to be transport Canada or Canada Coast Guard approved.

Many years ago, we were stopped when fishing near the Willows during opening weekend.

We were in a pontoon boat and had flares but the gun style. We were given a fine for incorrect flares and although the Police said these were legal on back lakes; this boat is kept and always on Bobs Lake, we were considered to be in "big water and possible to be a mile off shore!"

I'm sure we could have attested but not a good idea on the water and we had enough money from poker the night before to cover.

If you buy them from Canadian Tire or any where for that matter, make sure you can see the date clearly in the plastic containers they come in. I bought some that I didn't realize, expired before the start of the next season.

Marine Outfitters has current dated flared in stock.

They are supposed to discount the price to reflect the age of the flares. If they are a year old they should be 25% off.

We posed this to Dan, and he suggested asking here...

...all we have left at Age 79 is a 12' punt, powered by a 9.9 Yammy 4-stroke.

Living on the North Shore of PEC, nearly straight across from the mainland Water Tower, with water about a Klick wide, do we need to buy new Flares to comply with current Regs? Chances of drifting out to The Big O are basically ZERO, and we have oars to get home if needed.

Also don't night fish anymore.

Suspect the answer is: why risk confrontation?

Checked with a well experienced Marine Officer. Up to 6m only a flashlight is required. Over 6m, flares are required on the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario.

I'm under 6m and always carry flares. Better to have them and not need them.
