I went out for the first fish of the year yesterday. Drove down River Road from Napanee (County Rd 9). There was not a speck of snow anywhere. The odd bit of open water on the Napanee River itself. Yikes, Looked toward Deseronto from the south shore: there was a lake of open water north of Foresters Island. The open water must have been near a kilometer long. We bought minnows at Dew Drop Inn (still 6 bucks a dozen !!). Stopped at the top of Huffs Road. Not to sure if there was open water but it looked like no more than a skin of ice. Proceeded to the Sherman's Point boat launch. There was a pop up tent about 100 meters from the ramp and another angler about the same distance out. There was a patch of open water visible north of Witlow Point. We talked to some folks who said there was about 5 inches of ice (near the shore at the ramp). We went out about 150 meters to the south west. The ice was black, as clear as glass and slippery as hell. Thickness was about 5 inches but we were less than 150 meters from shore in 17.5 FOW. Perch kept us amused. No wallys.
It looks like we need more cold weather for Huffs, Long Reach or Deseronto to be fishable. No way for quads.
I think my next fish will be near Potters. Be careful. Walking and spuddin' is a good idea.
