Well Steve, it was my first visit to Merlands and I didn't meet anyone from there until Sunday at noon when we checked out (we arrived Friday night late, tried to "check in" Saturday night after fishin all day and having dinner, no one at the office, the Santa Claus parade was on) so I don't know what kind of "supervision" the camp/fish cleaning station had.
I do know that when I asked them (the meat hunters) if they had any fish like these in there neck of the woods , they said no and I said "well we won't have any here either if you keep killin our breeders.
Now they were within their "rights" based only on what I could "SEE", four guys, four fish, but I don't know what they caught and killed earlier in the week so...
I can state that when I arrived on Firday night, there were a large number of large fish in the fish cleaning hut's garbage can...
Keep a trophy, release everything else!

Steve, I'll take your word on it as I cannot speak from personal experience. And if you think it's bad now, wait until next year as the closing of Tip Of the Bay will only encourage more folks to go to Merlands.
Hard to clean a fish in a hotel room! (but I bet it happens)

I watched a number of guys at Merlands, obviously from "outta province" slaughter a number of double digit hens for food!

In my opinion I don't see the point in keeping large fish. I think the smaller ones taste better and leaving the larger females and males to pass on their genes is the best thing for the fishery.
So how many is "a number"? And how many fisherman? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought only one fish over 24.8" long can be kept per angler. I do believe a 10lb fish would surpass that length. Therefore someone may have been breaking Ontario laws (Area 8).

Just to sum up this thread.

There are some ignorant folks fishing on the water and on the shore and there are some great folks fishing on the water and on the shore. Of these 2 groups some are from out of town and some are locals. Some keep fish to eat and others release their fish. Some know their ramp rules and others dont. Some are from otta province/country and have no vested interest in this fishery and others from outta provience/country love this fishery and throw back all the big hens so they can come back next year and catch them again.

I agree with FITCHIN "I try to remain positive and give great respect to others on or off the water, I would hope they do the same."

I dont see any point in removing this thread or in letting it continue to fester. So lets lock it down and move on.
