I cross over the Ambassador Bridge in the springtime, and the number of boats is simply un-frickin'-believable.

If anyone with a decent-sized boat wants to take my dad and me fishing in the spring in exchange for BOQ fishing now please contact me via PM, or via email which is my username here at the hot mail dot com. We will be out in two weeks and continually until ice-in and have room for one.

I'll be working on a house for a retired commercial fisherman soon so I'll ask him where they go, the commercial fishers have become tight lipped after being deamonized by the sport fishing industry but he might let me in on some spots.

They come in at scotch bonnet in the fall and some are caught there in the summer but there are far less fishing the area than years ago so you don't hear about them as much.

I have a question though, that no one to date has been able to answer. Has anyone been able to track these pods of very large walleye that are obviously leaving the Bay after spawning to spend the rest of year feasting on alewife in Lake O? Where do they go? How far do they go?

Yes these fish can be caught during the summer, most of the boats I see out in the Lake during the summer are Rigging for Salmon and Trout, very few boats target walleye on Lake Ontario. The pods move daily and some days you spend a large amount of time covering water and hunting for active pods of walleye. They are usually suspended in the top quarter of the water column and can be taken on spinners and crawlers. Some areas I have had summer success are Melville Shoal, Pigeon Island, Charity Shoal, Timber Island out towards Main Duck Island, which includes all the shoals between.

I launched at Mcfarlands last Wednesday. There were 8 walleye carcasses with the fillets gone laying in the water by the dock, keep a few fish if you want it is your right but don't be slobs! I also saw two floaters while fishing and saw a boat with five guys land a walleye all five had their picture taken with the fish. I timed them and the fish was "released" over five minutes after they netted it.
On a better note I did manage to land and quickly release a 28" and a 30".

Well that was an interesting mix of replies. I do think that the locals and fish-hawkers are mostly the catch and release kind of folks. And for sure educating newcomers to the BOQ is probably a wise thing to do. But how? As far as keeping 10+ lb walleye to eat, is there a chance they'll die after eating them and not return to catch anymore? LOL. OK, not that funny.

As far as blaming the natives, I have not seen any articles or reports saying that they are behaving as you say. So I just can't say. I hope it's not some knee jerk reaction to the kind of small town rumours that have circulated in the county since I was a kid about how the natives speer the fish and just leave them on the banks for example. I support some kind of amendment to native fishing rights to keep them from fishing during spawning but I would rather see this done voluntarily rather than open up a whole can of worms.

I read somewhere that it is unwise to weigh a walleye vertically, or any fish for that matter. I think if I ever do get a hog I'll just be happy estimating it's weight and leave it at that. Alas it won't be this year. Damn kids. I have to stop cooking with cheese so I can find the time to get down next year.

Tracker, did you say walleye around Timber and Main Ducks? We've got into some good smallie fishing there but never knew there were walleye. Sounds like a plan....

Here's something I don't get at all - the apparent lack of small fish in Quinte any more. In the early 90's, you would catch scores of half- to two-pound fish in the spring. You couldn't miss. Now it is actually difficult to catch them. They've never really been around in the fall.

Is this seeming [to me] lack of little fishies indicative of a failing fishery?

Pete,

Not true,

From Trenton to Deseronto, all summer and fall (even the past few weekends), they were very catchable.

20+ counts from 1lb to 3.5lb in 4-5 hours whenever myself and a pal (or dad) could squeeze the trip in. No live bait necessary (thought it helped some guys....but those were also the guys that weren't piloting the boat 8) )
