NEW: OUELLETTE ANNOUNCES CHAIR OF BAY OF FISHERIES ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Mark Lamb -- Sat, Feb/8/03
Ontario’s Natural Resources Minister Jerry Ouellette announced today the appointment of Tom Worden as chair of the Fisheries Advisory Committee for the Bay of Quinte and eastern Lake Ontario, which will provide input on a long-term fishery plan.
"Tom will be a great asset as the committee works to make recommendations on the fisheries," said Ouellette. "Our government is committed to sustaining fish populations in eastern Lake Ontario and Quinte now and for future generations."
Worden is past provincial chairman of Ducks Unlimited Canada. The other committee members will be announced shortly and will be representative of the local community.
The creation of a fisheries advisory committee was suggested during public meetings held last winter and recommended by Bob Gray, the facilitator appointed by the ministry. Gray, who has considerable experience in helping resolve complex resource management concerns, was the chair of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Round Table during the Lands for Life planning process from 1997 to 1999. He took part in discussions on the state of walleye stocks in Lake Nipissing.
The committee will provide input and recommendations to the ministry on a long-term fishery plan to include fish community and fisheries objectives. It may also suggest complementary approaches for meeting fishery objectives, such as angling regulation changes, habitat improvement and adjustments to commercial fishing licence conditions. While the angling regulation changes introduced in 2002 for walleye will remain in 2003, any future changes will be reviewed with the fisheries advisory committee.
"I know the community will benefit from the committee's views on fisheries management," said Ouellette. "We look forward to hearing their recommendations in the near future."
The minister also released the 2001 Lake Ontario Annual report, available on MNR’s Web site at
