I checked the regs and it looks like it is except at the mouth of Moria river in Bellville harbour.

If this is right let me know.

Thanks

Good question. Sorry I do not have the regs. handy.

On the subject of perch I heard of a report yesterday from a local ice hut operator that saw some big, small and inbetween sized perch caught. The nice thing to me was to begin (hopefully) to see a range including a couple that apparently were close to a pound. Nice eating!

I have been out 3 times 2 hours each time for perch in Trenton and caught 39 between 10-12 inches, and hundreds of smaller ones 2-8 inches,I think there will be some good perch fishing in the B-O-Q in years to come if the commercial fishing stays out of the bay.

Here is what the execptions read in the 2003 regs (bottom of pg 32):

" Moira River and Bay of Quinte - From the Lott Dam downstream, including the Belleville Harbour and Bay of Quinte - Fishing sanctuary - No fishing April 1 to May 2 "

Does this mean BOQ is closed to fishing between April 1 to May 2 ?

If anyone bumps into the MNR this weekend, please ask for a clarification on this, as it seems very vague to me.

The Napanee River is also a Sanctuary from Apr 1 to May 2.

I believe that you cannot fish as it is illegal to fish for a species, even though you are going to release it. therefore fishing for perch after Feb 28th might constitute fishing for walleye which is illegal.

The rules are vague, but disgression is the better part of valour, when it comes to fishing out of season, Boats and stuff can be seized...

I think that from March 1st to May 3rd, put the rods and stuff away or go north out of ZOne 8.

Hi All,

Just to add some clarifications.

In the regs if a body of water or a section of a body of water (lake or river) is listed as a Fish Sanictuary during a period of time there is absolutely, 100 % NO fishing allowed.

So if the Napanee River is a fish santuary from Apr 1 to May 2 then you cannot fish for any species in the Napanee.

The reason for this is simply. You can say you are fishing for perch but you may still catch Walleye (on purpose or not). Either case you can hurt the fishery as the Walleye are spawning.

So please, follow the regs and DO NOT fish in a fish santuary for anything.

Cheers,

Mike

You misread it, it actually says:

"Belleville Harbour IN the Bay of Quinte"

Not

"Belleville Harbour AND the Bay of Quinte."

To me the fish sanctuary is for the Moira river and they just wanted to included the mouth which is in the Bellville harbour on the BOQ.

I plan to hit shallow bays around Big Bay area for ice-out perch. I don't plan on keeping ANY.

And if I caught any fish out of season bass, pike etc.. I would releases them quick as possible and move to another spot.

But I will check with the MNR thou, wouldn't want to lose my boat.

I will post once I get clarification from the right authorities.

I phoned the Tweed MNR office and they informed me that the sanctuary is only in the Bellville harbour.

The southern most part of the harbour is from the end of Meyers Pier to the southern most tip of Zwick Island park. The sanctuary is north of these boundaries.

I hope that you are right about those regs, because I am coming down from Montreal on the 28th for a wedding and would love to get out. A good friend of mine lives in sandy cove so we should be alright. I am from Belleville and moved to Montreal with my wife who works for Nortel. I still come home to fish the Quinte series but miss the bay a lot. I have gone out here a couple of times this year for perch. The first time I went out they all looked at me funny when I showed up with two rods. They quickly informed me that you are aloud TEN rods per person, so I went out and bought ten little stand rods that go down when the fish bites. What a lot of fun when a school of fish go by and you are running all over the place.
Good fishing all and I will see you on May 25th for the first tournament.
