We lost a nice one last weekend and suspect the line met up with a sharp tooth. We got to debating whether to use a leader or not. We haven't as of yet but are wondering if anyone does well with a wire leader or not.

BTW, We fished east of the ferry the weekend of the 9th and lost 2 and landed none. We only saw one landed. But that's old news....

Many fishers are using Florocarbon leaders and not necessarily big pound test.

We use 12 lb test

Haven't hit a pike yet.

The main line on all my reels is 20 pounds test mono that I use for salmon (Fleaflicker). What I do for walleye fishing in Quinte in the fall is simply adding a 100' leader of 14 pounds test of Silver Thread fluorocarbon monofilament line. My lures are tied directly to this fluoro line.

I have done that for several years and it work great, that way my in-line planer boards are attached to the big 20 pounds test line and my chances to loose one are thus smaller. If the line have to break it will probably happend on the fluoro 14 ponds test portion.
