Well I've been out with the guides checking and they have been fishing. Here’s what we have found. Big bay is pretty well the safest ice around. There is one spot that has formed an ice tunnel at the trough that the ice breaker went through. If you were to go out there (which I don’t recommend) you would drill through about four inches of ice then find running water of about ten inches then another 8 inches of ice. When these form it’s a real great idea to stay away because one day the top layer of ice may be four inches and the next it good only be a skim of ice. This tunnel is what is causing the thin ice at Point Anne west. (Stay away) and at rush bar (stay away) Potters creek area has good ice as well as Herkimer and Bakelite area. They now have no parking signs along the north shore road on big Island and these are there for the snow plow days. So use caution and pay attention if you choose to park there. If the plows need to get through they will have you towed. I had an excellent report from Herkimer this morning so maybe by the weekend it will stay the same and we won’t have to venture to big Island.
Point-Anne east has good ice as well as good fish .Potters is the same as every year, very spotty sometimes morning bite is the best then sometimes the evening bite is the best. Some of the guys were telling me that potters have a good bite going between 11:00 pm and 12:00 am.
All the ice that was check from the bay bridge in Belleville is very spotty and not good. The Trent River is still a dangerous and (still mainly open) spot to stay away from. Weiss Rd. had only 3 inches max at it and the fellow that was telling me this said he could look out and still see a lot of open spots on the water. I personally say to stay away from the bay bridge in Belleville all the way to Trenton. It's too bad for me because I live near Trenton and love to fish that area but not yet.
We are supposed to get some nice weather moving in so I hope I can get in some steelhead fishing as well. With the amount of water coming down the Trent River it should be a lot of fun.
Have fun be safe and don’t do anything crazy and we will all have a great weekend.
Ron

Thanks Ron,

A lot of people are really wondering how the ice is near the places you mentioned.

Cheers

Thanks for the update, Ron.

What is the ice like between Massauga and Horseshoe Pt (away from the channel)? As well, from Horseshoe to Big Island Shoal?

Just want to be safe on the ice (especially with a quad and hut in tow).

Thanks in advance .......................

Thanks for the report. I'm keen to get out of Herchimer, what depth would be a starting point? Nice BOW, that will keep him in the game and give him something great to talk about at school.
