What kind of Auger is it? Have you used it to open up old holes? This can often warp the blades. I have heard that you can use the Strike Master Lazer Hand augers on old holes, but most other ones will warp. Are the blades sharp?

I have both a Strikemaster Electra Lazer and a Strike Master Lazer hand auger.

I love my Electra.

The Strikemaster Lazer does well also. I only bring it with me when I am just walking out on lesser ice and want to convserve weight for pulling.

Skating from side to side is cause by a few things,so if you can answer one of these questions with a yes you will find the problem and maybe the remedy.

1-Like Jeff said, did you try to bore through an existing hole?
May have warped blades or change pitch on auger.

2- Did you try to pound or force through the final turn of the auger when you reach the last bit of the hole?
May have warped blades or change pitch on auger.

3- Left the auger in the snow and open to the weather?
Check for a bridge of ice between the cutting blades if it has not already melted away.

4- Changed the Blades?
Make sure that they were not put on upside down

5- Have the blades been sharpened?
If the Cutting pitch was changed then the blades may be needing a tuning(Re-sharpened)

6- Drill a hole in a tire track or sandy ice or hit a piece of gravel?
Get the blades touched up and sharpened.

The odd time, it can be how it is shimmed with a hand auger. Assuming it is shimmed correctly and you need a sharpening job, you can send them into Rockys in Orillia and perhaps consider getting a spare set of blades for the interim. Most retailers should have the number. The machines used to be very expensive to sharpen them, with no one that I was aware of in the area having the gear to do it properly in years past. That said, things change.

In an area with lots of holes like the Bay if Quinte you will see a lot of regulars, simply use a spud to use existing holes that have a mild cover of ice. As others have said, never use your auger to drill out an old hole as it is very hard on blades. Like anything else, some spuds are better than others, with the finer ones I have seen using a blade from a zamboni (very hard to come by).

Just some ideas.

Regards
Donald Stokes

You can get hand auger & power auger baldes sharpened in Kingston at ED'S saw sharpening on Princess st. west on Bayridge drive, he is located in the same store as MOntgomery Electronics. I had both kinds done last year and they worded like new. Just remove the blades and bring them in. His turnaround time ws 2 to 3 days. Hope this helps.

John

Not sure if this guy does auger blades or what he will charge but here is a Trenton area sharpener.
