Last night there were two vans of spear persons..,(entrance to canal)12 guys in total from 6 NATIONS, North of Hamilton. Said, "they come down here, as they cannot spear pickerel there, not even on their own reserve." Counted 12 spot lights further up on Trent R. , then got to hell out of there fast.

I don't understand why spearing is not allowed north of Hamilton but is allowed on the Trent and in Napanee. Are there different laws/ regs that apply north of Hamilton that don't apply on the Trent or napanee? Perhaps someone from the appropriate government office could clarify this matter?

My father is a sales person who sells to southeren Ontario which includes the reserve east of Belleville. Last year around this time he was offered some walleye that had been speared, he said no! He asked this person why he did this. His responce was that he hated to eat fish, did not like "traditional" fishing and it was his right as an native. He never keep any fish for his family, always gave them away or disposed of them in the garbage. It was a couple nights out with the boys he said. I'm happy to say that since then my father has not been back to that location. If they (natives) are that poor that they need food for their families, then, ok go get some fish, but I would bet my house that this is never the case. I understand that these "spearers" are a very small minority in their community, but they are ruining a precious resourse for everyone.

It's not that we can't spear the area of which you speak.What was meant to be said was, there's no large concentrations of pickerel.Actually there is a small run. No we didn't spear them all.I don't remember there ever being a large run in our local river.

there is treaty law that the aboriginal can only hunt fish within his/her treaty right. one case of a hunter shoting a moose in thunder bay he was from six nations, got charged and charges stuck, also a thing to remember that treaty rights and criminal acts are different, plus the six nations is a little less tolerant of this , not all natives are bad, I SEE OUR OWN KIND IN THE BAY keeping limit after limit, meaning the locals.

I believe the rules are they are allowed to take as much as their family will need to feed themselves....this is not the case, I have heard stories of guys pullin 200 fish out during the spawning season, show me a family who can eat 200 fish and I will keep my mouth shut, also I know a guy who speared fish and has had them in his freezer for 2 years? can someone back me up by saying thats a total waste??? and as for them trying to sell them.....that is downright absolutely wrong, it is their right to gain food for their family, not to poach fish and gain money......I know that most natives spear respectfully and do only take what they need, but there are the odd few who absolutely ruin the image for all other natives

If there are any Natives reading this I am not bashing natives, hell my girlfriend and ex-girlfriend are native......some of my closest friends are native......all im saying is there are some out there who abuse their rights and this should be stopped

I hear what you folks are saying.I hate waste of anything that is meant to be food.If you take it you better eat it imho or at least give it to someone in need I don't even care the colour of said hugry person. As for playing Cowboys and Indians... :lol:

That is exactly the attitude that causes some of the current problems on both sides of the fence.Besides where are ya going to get the cowboys,we got the Indians, although the federal gov.is still trying to put an end to that. Don't get me wrong here.I don't condone wanton waste of resources and don't practise it myself.I do like reading your board and learning about the other half's concerns.What can be done without eroding what little rights we have left to us? Not trying to incite a riot here either. I hope your fishing season is a good one.Play safe on the big water.

I have no problems with the spears......actually I like it very much...as long as the gill nets are outlawed......

Why stop.....there ......when taking a moose they should be only able to use spears also and take as many moose as they can eat......

If they want to use their 300 Win. Mags.....they should be reqired to purchase a moose licence and apply for a tag via THE ONTARIO MOOSE TAG DRAW......that woud be great....

But hey.....thats just my opinion.......and who am I`m only a tax payer like the rest of you........
