How much weight does your boat&trailor put on the tongue of your vehicle?

I have a Grand Am and think it putting down about 190lbs and I feel that’s to much for my little car.

Is it safe to have only 140lb onto the tongue or will that make towing a problem?

First of all the best way to find out your tongue weight is to get your rig hooked up and on a level surface. Now assuming you have a crank type jack on the front of the trailer put it on a regular bathroom scale. Crank it up till the weight comes off your car's hitch. Thats your tongue weight.

As far as your car's towing capacity it probably about 1000 to 1500 lbs and the max tongue weight is probably around 100 to 150 lbs. This can be checked by calling a Pontiac dealer.

Typical trailer tongue weight is 10% of your boat/trailer combo's total weight. So, if your boat weighs, say, 3000 lb, then your tongue weight shouldn't be any more than 300 lb. I assume you're exceeding your specific 10% barrier, so you need to move your boat back further on the trailer to center more weight on the wheels/axle.

To do this, next time you launch your boat, simply unbolt and move the bowstop on the trailer toward the rear a few inches and see what difference that makes for ya.
