The annual May vacation started on May24th with a downpour and a wiped out fishing day- Oh well clean the trailer and have a brown pop.
Sunday's weather was better but began casting near WagonWheel Point, got a nice 2 lb LM Bass on a Smithwick Rogue and a 24" pike behind Ram Is on a RedSwan Golder Spoon. That was the morning.
Sunday afternoon (1700) headed to Long Reach, nothing familiar was working so decided to have look for some suspended fish in the 30 - 40 foot levels. Found some fish between the yellow marker and Thompsons, hit a couple (21" and 18") on a CC Shad - always one of my favs. Headed over to SHermans to make a couple of passes there with the Uzick Spinner and picked up a pair in five minutes (17" & 18") almost on top of the weedbeds.
Monday was a non fishing day.
Tuesday - Superpat & I got back to the deep waters of Long Reach again and I hit another pair ( 19" & 23 1/2") on a Silver Tail Dancer. That was the action for Tuesday.
Wednesday, Headed to east end and the flats, trolled up there for three hours with one 17" pike on a Uzick Spinner. Went out in the afternoon and the wind was howling so discretion was the better part of valour and fished near the Pig Farm- hit one small walleye - 14" on the Uzick Spinner.
Thursday was a travel day, e.g Non fishing
Friday - headed back to Long Reach looking for the suspended fish, couldn't find em near Thompsons. Mallory Bay, West Shore or Shermans. Dave Chatterton appaeared to searching also as his boat was all over the Reach. Struck out Friday AM. The evenings fishing gave the same results.
Saturday- We headed back to the Reach with the wind blowing a gale from the east, getting there was easy, getting back was another story. We started the troll near the the yellow marker and shortly thereafter, I hit an 18" on a TailDancer, Trolled a little more and went in towards the shore and hit another 20" on the Tail Dancer. Gave the Taildancer to Pat to use and I used the CC Shad. Gee I got another 17". We trolled into some shallower water (20 feet) and Pat picked up an 18" on the TailDancer. We decided to see what the other 6 boats were doing in the 12-15 foot levels, I lost one at the boat and Pat hooked and landed three more, (14" - 18" - 17" - all released)
This lure is growing in popularity by the minute.
Nice to have met Slopman at Ranm Is and shared secrets
Fished in the late afternoon in the Rain and the east wind, Hooked and lost a big fish when my line parted- Guess I should have replaced it
Got a couple of small eyes (12-13" range) and decided to call the vacation fishing over at 1900.
Great week with good results. The fish are biting as the weather changes. Sunday morning at Hay Bay was 9 degs and a wind, felt like May 3rd all over again. OF course the season appears to be a couple of weeks late as the Lilacs are still in bloom.
Here's a couple of snaps from the week.
