Ladies and Gentlemen fishermen
Kiwanis last Thursday had Rob Pye of Ontario Federation Anglers & Hunters as a guest speaker and he delivered the following messages from the 83,000 members of OFAH.
1. Cormorants have been mismanaged and as a result they are destroying the community of small fishes. These fish are needed in the structure, not only to feed larger fish but they are a necessary part of the aquaculture.
2. Just as bad and perhaps worse, they destroy plants and trees near the water and they are a major source of polution, causing illness, spreading disease, and beaches to close. Without exageragion they put 4,800,000 pounds of raw sewage into our waters during their annual visit to our area.
The Ministry had undertaken stronger measures to control the cormorant, including oiling eggs, and shooting.
This action is great, and it is hoped it is not too late. The Ministry need your supporting letters and faxes to demonstrate they have the support of communities such as yours and ours. The bird needs to be taken off the protected species list.
