If your lure is rated lets say for a depth of 20' my understanding is that the lure is neautrally buoyant at this depth.
Does that mean that if you put this lure on a down rigger and put the downrigger to lets say 60" the lure will actually try to go up to its rated depth as opposed to going down another 20' from the 60' the cannonball is sitting at?

lure goes down by the size of bill deeper diver have large bills to get them down.

I always thought the weight wanted to go up, the bill wanted to pull down, so it pretty well ran at the depth of the down rigger. Biggest part played would be how much line is run between the clip and bait. Hope this helps

I don't know for sure, but I would say your lure would run deeper after the cannonball depth. If you drop your cannonball down to 60 feet, that would become your new "zero" and the lure would dive from there.
I don't believe the lures become neutrally bouyant at a certain depth when trolling. You control the running depth of a lure according to line out, line diameter, speed...etc from where it's clipped on.

Its the lip curve but yes a floating crank would run shallower some sort of factors im not in physics lol

Did a lot of hunting and found a few good site on walkers downriggers and some good u tube info,s. The ball,s depth does become ground zero. The down riggers readout can also be off. The angle created by the boat and distance behind the boat that the ball is at, has to be calculated, this angle is affected by the drag created by the bait,balls weight & profile, boat speed. Floating lures will run above, diving run below, now line type, length of line between lure and ball has to be figured in. Hope this helps
