Sand or Salt??

I know this topic has been on here before, but probably just a good reminder for the upcoming weeks at the boat launches. I've never experienced a frozen launch before, but want to be prepared just in case. Is sand good enough, or is salt required?? Not sure if salt going into the water is a good idea.

Hi Tom. Grab yourself a jug of Ice Melter from Canadian Tire. They have the stuff with traction aid in it and it works good.

Why not just use salt sand mix?

This is pretty much the reason why I asked the question. Wasn't sure about salt polluting the water. polliwogg...do you of anywhere where I could find the info on it being illegal, just so I could read it for myself??

Salt is actually worse than alot of other chemicals. Salt doesnt evaporate. Its the same as dumping draino in the lake you won't find anything specific saying you can't but if the wrong person catches you its going to be a fine. Sand for sure.

Walleye 9 here is the excerpt from the Canada Fisheries Act;
“ … the Fisheries Act … prohibits persons from (1) depositing or permitting the deposit of (2) a deleterious substance of any type (3) in water frequented by fish or in any place where the deleterious substance may enter such water. …”

Definition of deleterious substance:
“A substance is deleterious if, when added to any water it would alter the quality of the water such that it is likely to render the water deleterious to fish, fish habitat or to the use by man of fish that frequent the water. There is no stipulation … that the substance must be proven to be deleterious to the receiving water … On the contrary, the language makes it clear that the substance is deleterious if, when added to any water, it degrades or alters the quality of the water to which it has been added. The “any water” referred to … is not the receiving water. Rather, it is any water to which the impugned substance is added, after which it can be determined whether the quality of that water is rendered deleterious to fish, fish habitat or the use by man of fish that frequent that water …”

Ya...that's why there are containment barriers along all roadways to prevent any winter road salt runoff from reaching any body's of water.....lol.

But two wrongs don't make a rite I guess

I don't get out enough anymore to really have a say, but I have had good luck with a salt/sand mix (just enough salt to keep the sand from freezing). I'm too impatient to wait for salt to work.....
