I would just like to set up a general topic for the ice thickness in the area you fish. I know its getting to the point of being safe for walking out in most areas but it would be nice for people to know just a little more info before heading out. I am not saying to give out your GPS marks (would be nice though) but just in general the areas you are in and ice thickness you encountered. This could help someone from making a big mistake and going swimming.

You could put in a boat at Point Anne, and some idiots are using it for a dump site, with a couple of electric fans, some furniture, and a pile of leaves,

What I have seen the last couple days driving around is the dangerous foam ice being made. It results from high winds and freezing temps. It has been a dozen or so years since I saw this the last time. Foam ice is not very safe although it looks good. It is slush ice that has an insulation factor with lots of air pockets. Take a couple weeks for it to get hard underneath.

Be careful out there guys.

Al

Sister inlaw said she was driving past Potters today around 2:30 and saw 5 guys walking out. A little too early for this guy but I am curious to know what its like. High of -15 tomorrow so should be making some ice. Hopefully they post their results.

I too was driving around today and took a look at Point Anne, Herchimer and George St in Belleville. All are now frozen over but there is a lot of bad looking ice at Point Anne and Herchimer. I agree with Trannyman that the broken up stuff is really sketchy. At George St there is a bit of bad ice but a lot of smooth ice that should continue to thicken nicely though I'd give it another few days. From what I could see, the ice on the south side, north of Peate's Point, appeared to be in much better condition.

To be very honest, we do this thread every year.... The ONLY way to find safe ice is to check it yourself.
