Quinte Fishing

Hi everyone,
I went fishing yesterday and like everyone else came home empty handed.

I had trouble with one of my new planer board clamps. It released my braided line at least three times and floated away.

I even wrapped the line around the clamp and it still released. The rubber pads are in good condition.
Any ideas? Should I be using anything but braided line?

Are you talking about an offshore planar board? If so use a red OR-16 clip on the front or back and make sure your line is behind the center pin. You'll never lose another board again.

I second the OR18 snap locks. I got mine from brownbeartacklebox in kingston

I had the same problem until I replaced the standard orange clip with the red ones but also a friend pointed out to me that I was closing the front clamp incorrectly. I was closing the black clamp by pushing the lever towards the board but if you close the lever away from the board there is a little bar that stops the line from escaping the board. If your line slips out of the black clamp this bar stops your board from drifting away. You still need to reel the line in but it's better than chasing your board.

If you wrap your braid on either style front clip , you will never have a problem. Braid can slip through OR18s

I use 30lbs braid for my board rods and unless it is dead calm (which is never on Quinte), I wrap the front OR-16 clip (wrapped behind the pin) to eliminate slippage.

back clip I just set the braid behind the pin on the OR-16.

Hey Steve...The OR16's have the center pin (the red ones) Do the 18's also have a center pin??

as recommended by a board member, I purchased the OR 18 and I'm sure that it will work great. With taxes it cost me $25 but if my planer board stays on, it will be worth it.

The suggestions to purchase another clip are good and I'm sure the red OR-16 clip will solve the issue...the only problem is that they're expensive. Some shops are charging almost $15 a clip!! Can't believe how expensive of -shore boards are getting. Love the product though.

One change I have made that solved the problem right away was spinning the front clip back towards the board. Sounds weird because the clip is mounted backwards but if you think of it, the more tension applied (by waves or boat speed) the deeper the line pulls into the clip. You will never drop a board again.

Should note the boards do run at a slightly different angle doing this so it takes your eyes a bit to adjust. If you do it to one board, you should do it to all so they're all running at the same angles.

I purchased a handful of the red OR 16's (with center pin) a few months ago and they were only 6 or 7 bucks each. I use mono for trolling now, but I used to use braid and have never had one fall off. You could buy 3 or 4 16's for the same price as one 18. I also use the 16's for my snap weights and have never had a weight fall off either. 16's are the way to go!!!!

I've found the 16s great for snap weights, but on the boards I find that braid eventually wears it's way through the pins allowing the line to slip through.
The 18s are way over priced, but are worth it!!!!
