When I am fishing the Fraser R. for sturgeon or the saltchuck for halibut, 100 pd test is the standard.

At home on the BOQ, I like braid with a mono leader (cost effective and it works) or 8 pd test mono.

River fishing, it is often mono with say 4 pd test for rainbows off of the Great Lakes or say 12-30 pf test, depending upon species targeted (mainly coho, chinook aka spring aka king, pinks, sockeye).

I think there are so many different applications that I like to ensure a variety. I do prefer buying larger spools if at all possible and find it very frustrating when I cannot get 1000 yd for mono unless I am in a larger centre.

Wow, i am surprised how many guys use braid with a leader, i guess i will have to try it out... on sunny days..
that seems to be when i struggle using straight braid.. currently i use straight floro when its bright and sunny out, fishing for bass or walleye.
Thanks guys,
steve

i have tried it all i break 8# mono too often and am afraid of loosing good lures and fish ill use thin strong mono for light tackle only

i went to 12# floro it was good but it would get nicks it never broke but i would fear pike breaking it

i finally made the change to braid 40# 832 is my pick tighter weave gives me better knots and i can rip it out of trees and through weeds fearlessly still gets tons of action and better hooksets

floro leaders still scare me especially for pike and im not convinced ill catch more bass i take one snap with my nail clippers and it slices clean through floro it takes more then 1 try to cut that braid but some ppl swear by it

Hey Mudcat: I have had more pike bite through braid then I ever had with fluorocarbon. In the heavy junk I use 20 lb leader, and for all other baitcasters 12 or 15lb. Most of the musky guys are now using flouro leaders instead of steel. Give it a try.

I use a bit of everything for my bass stuff from 12 lb FC to 65 lb braid I just try and match what Im doing for heavy matted weeds or solp its braid. Rock with a bit of weed its Fc do too is abrasion resistance.
