getting good at it shortrange in the living room, casting into the blue box in the hallway without getting backlash, with the brake set at 3, really getting good at feathering the spool. what is the highest and lowest you set the brake, and reason for doing so??

If you watch most fishing shows you probably noticed that most of the pros will have 6 to 8 rods rigged at all times. This way they have their reels tuned into particular lure wieghts etc. I usually carry three, crankbait, plastic and stickbait, so over time I've learned to control the reel more by thumbing rather than rely on the brake. Don't let the reel run wild, but a setting between 4 and 6, with minumum drag should work well for most lure wieghts if you primarily use your thumb to control.
As to distance, unless you're using minimum brake you're mainly controled by lure weight.
Try a plastic called Kelly's Scented Crawler, I get them at Grimsby Tackle, this with a worm wieght thrown into cover will produce a lot of big fish.
If you fly fish you already understand that it will take a lot of practice to master your baitcaster, but I know you'll really enjoy it.

take the grandkids fishin
