Hey Friendlybutcher, nice name...lol, pretty close to mine.
I'm no expert or guide, but ever since I was young, my Dad and I always fished huffs rd. We always seem to get fish, but watch the ice, its so unpredictable. We always used the Mr. Champ's - green and silver, red and silver, and blue and silver.
Since I've moved to Belleville, I've tried point anne more, and still had luck on those lures. I've also recently have tried vertical jigs, by Badd Boyz, and I've had luck on them too !!
Hope that helps,
Tyler

Hello...
I also recommend the guide but if can't bring yourself or the guys to do it then I will offer up a few things...
1. it would help to have some correct lures, Mr Champs in Gold, Sidewinders in sliver green in the am and orange gold in the PM, 2 tone stamped gold and sliver williams will help as well, go see the guys at Qunite outdoors or the guys at Cdn Tire in Belleville, they will help. Make sure your line on your rod is fresh, braided with flourcarbon leads will help you, the water is very clear. or just good quality mono, low vis is best, if you can afford it and can put it on..
2. I hope you have a gas auger, because one of the best things you can do is work your way out or in if you aren't getting fish, move often if you get nothing or mark nothing.
3. a combo of minnows, the new gulp minnows on a bear claw with a drop sinker can help and jgging sidewinders etc.with that many guys if everyone tries something different it might work for you.
4. Not sure if you have transport or not, but you should catch fish off of Point Anne straight out and then work east and west, you will find a pretty constant depth, so if you can get a countour map with GPS that would help, but if you don't, I am assuming you don't..... then have a good look around for concentrations of huts or guys...they might be on a line that would work for you...don't go and fish right beside them, thats not good...
5. Ask the guys at the shore and on your way out, most guys will help
I can't give you locations yet, just going this weekend...however we did quite well straight out from Point Anne 2 weeks ago, but they always move around..we will search for them again, that's half the fun anyway..

Maybe some don't have an extra $100 to spend.... those from out of town have to pay for gear, gas, and a hotel room for a night or two.... never mind giving the wife a couple hundred to spend the weekend you are away out on the ice.... I think some people are just looking for some direction, a "starting point" so to speak and enjoy learning how to fish on their own.. especially if they can't really afford to hire a guide.... remember we were all new at one time in our lives...

Cheers.... and if anyone would like some advice on where and how to fish the Niagara area of Lake Erie, or how to catch speckles in southern Quebec, let me know and I'll do my best to get you started in the right direction.

Good luck to all ..... and lets be honest its the walleye that dictate when we catch fish.. not the fisherman, his technique or his gear.....

Whenever I fish a new location I know there is a learning curve involved. I believe, generally, if I do some research on line, stop at some bait shops and chat (always buying something from the owners that offer information), and then spend some time on the water and am observant, after 3-4 outings I can be in the game. I never expect specific location information but try to get a feel for depths, lure selection, and techniques. There is definitely a great deal of satisfaction in putting in your time and becoming successful.
If I'm only going to be in an area a few days, I always hire a guide as it greatly shortens the learning curve and gets you on the fish and techniques right away. Eleven years is far to long! Hire a guide and start enjoying catching.
