Quinte Fishing

Hey guys and gals i'm new to the forum it looks like a great spot to find and share fishing info. I'm looking forward to it!

Santa left a good stack of bass pro gift cards under the tree and i need some help with decision making. I'm gunna pick up a sonar flasher unit or a power auger. Which flasher units would you recommend from BPS they sell humminbird and marcum units? As for the power auger i heard from a couple different sources that bass pro sells augers that are mass produced over seas with cheaper parts then other small dealers who order direct from the US. Is there truth to that?

look at it this way. you need a hole to fish from. but a flasher will help you catch fish, in my opinion a flasher is the answer if your talking one or the other. you can get a spud for 30 bucks to get thru the ice . I use a Marcum and love it but any flasher is better than No Flasher at all.......... and if you basically only fish the BOQ and shallow watter areas the bottom of the line flasher works just as good at the top of the line flasher does,,,,,,, learning to use the flasher is whats importiant

When it comes to Augers, a power auger is nice but is not really needed on most outings on Quinte. The ice is just not that thick. My first time out I dragged my $450 Jiffy power auger out. I think it took less than two seconds to put a hole though. Note: That was the day I first met Grizzly.

The next three times out, I've use my homemade $40 spud. With the right technique, you get a nice hole, through 6" of ice, in less than a minute.

Don't get me wrong, I won't be selling my power auger any time soon. LOL

Flashers are great for shallow water. But if you do any trout fishing up north, I highly recommend a Lowrance X67c. You will have the best of both worlds.
Besides Lowrance was the first & I am not sponsered by anyone. Just 40 years on the hardwater.

I also use it on the kayak and 12 foot tinny up north in the fall.

the humminbird units are nice. don't have one but used one and compared to the marcum there is a couple pluses. flat screen, no snow collects one screen, and it fits in a bucket. power auger is nice but not needed, $60 hand auger will do the trick nicely.

I was out at potters for my first trip to quinte ever today and took my ice 55 got two nice ones that i dont think i would have gotten without the fasher. so my vote is for the flasher

Thanks for the replys guys. I have decided to go with a flasher and just keep using the hand auger for this season (all tho the spots I'm fishing have over 12 inces of ice already!). So it comes down to either the ice 45 or the marcum lx-3tc, any thoughts or suggestions on these units? Is one better than the other? Thanks.

I have an ice 55 and i love it. i only used it a couple times last year but i like the digital depth read out and i think they are acurrate to less then an inch. pm JeffC. He has lots of knowledge on the this subject. Thats my best advice.
