hey guys.

I have an older fishing boat that has a wood casting deck. Recently I upgraded my trolling motor to a wireless system, however I am concerned that I may get into trouble with wood rot where the old foot steer was mounted to the casting deck. It was mounted using two screws that were drilled through the fibreglass into the wooden casting deck. My question is how do I go about weatherproofing those holes without wrecking the marine carpet that is on my boat?

Is it necessary to fill the holes to prevent rotting, or am I being overly cautious? Also. I have another question. If I get rain on my boat should I wait till it is dry before covering it again, or can I put the cover on it while it is still wet?

Thanks.

PS I realize that these questions may be common sense to some, but I am a new boat owner so it isn't common sense to me.

Dan

my 2 cents worth
i did that once with an older g-3 i had
had grey carpet in it what i did was :
used a grey silicon sealer in the hole [not much though and put a counter sunk srew in it
it looked like it belong there
i was always told :
dry it out before covering because
put a way wet it will promote MILDEW

Keeping the cover off will allow it to dry faster; but if you need to, you can cover it up as long as any hatches/compartments/lids are open. Air movement!

Thanks matt, that was actualy a good post for me too, i often try to leave the cover on as much as possible, as i live in the ruff area of town, its not bad, just some punk kids, so i dont want to give them temptation to try and steal a fish finder, or break into my rod lockers...

bluedogs idea sounds good..

Thanks Blue. I went out tonight and got the stuff applied it and it looks great. Also thanks for the info about the cover. I will definitely make sure to dry it out. Now if I go fishing in the rain, do I have anything to worry about if the boat get soaked? I only worry due to the fact that it has wood in its composition.

Mountain, I think most boats with flat decks are made out of wood. The carpet I'm sure can stand the abuse of the rain, and as far as the wood goes, hey, it's a boat. They're going to get wet. Letting it air out is probably the best option, (while it's parked) but it's not alwalys in your control. Just do the best of what you're capabale of. The weather might take it's toll on it after years of abuse, but it's just like anything else. Lots of guys fish in the rain and snow, and I don't think it's that big of a deal.
