I was fishing the bay for opening weekend and caught a few decent bass that I was keeping for a shore lunch.

When I went to remove them from my live-well, I noticed this fish had what I thought was a big string of fish snot (hard to notice but is hanging out of gill in pic). Didn't think anything otherwise and threw them all in the net to take them to clean.

This thing (have to call it a thing now cause I just puked a little in my mouth!) hanging got wrapped in the net and I saw that it was about 2' long and started to move.

That's right...MOVE!

It was then I realized it was some sort of worm.

I took a video but it's on my playbook which I haven't looked at yet...way too gross! If I can without loosing my lunch, I'll see about uploading it later.

Anyone else ever seen such a thing?

Cheers,

Paul

If I rememeber my 1978 fisheries parasitology course this is Protocephalus Ambloplites (sp?)- the bass tapeworm. Not an issue with human consumption. Folk who eat walleye will also be familiar with the tapeworm that is freqently found in the intestinal tract when completing frying pan surgery.

Bass Tapeworm. I have seen these in many bass i have caught over the years. I find they usually don't come out of the fish until after it has died. As mitch stated it has no effect on the fillet of the bass or its edibility. My best advice if these worms bother you is to keep your bass as fresh and alive as possible until you clean them.

Thanks Mac24.

They were alive but one that I think was suicidal and didn't last too long in my live-well.

I thought she had a sun-fish in it's belly but later when I cleaned it, noticed it was still 1/2 full of eggs.

This was opening weekend and was cooking a big shore lunch for people so needed the meat and I didn't realize it...so no bashing me for poaching. ;)

Cheers
