Has anyone recently ordered anything from the States? I'm looking at ordering an Abu Garcia 6500 C3 Line counter reel from Cabela's and with the U.S. $ around 1.30 Cdn, it works out to about $80 cheaper including shipping. My only concern is the duty. I haven't ordered anything from the States in a few years and someone told me that after the duty I may as well just buy it in Canada.

My other question is, does anybody have one of these reels? My concern with the LCD display is whether it will freeze in the colder temps and as with anything electrical how reliable are they?

thanks
Ken

Some things ordered from the States are not much less after all is said and done. Most things are lees even with duty and shipping. Abu reals are definitely less because I have ordered them from Cabelas. $30 each after duty and shipping.

Ken,

The LCD counter is cool, Penn have the same LCD thing and IF the battery dies, it's a trip to the factory.

Stay with Mechanical counter system - IMHO.

Remember you have friends in the states.

Ken:

Key consideration for possible duty charges is whether or not the item to be purchased in the USA was "made or assembled in the USA". Due to the NAFTA agreement, for any item made or assembled in the USA, there is no duty when imported into Canada. One can visit the CCRA website for more information (http://www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca/customs/gene ... enu-e.html). One can also telephone the Automated Customs Information Service at 1-800-461-9999 for information.

Of course, there will be GST/PST (calculated on the value of the item in Cdn funds) and there will be GST/PST on brokerage fees if any. Tomcat

Hey Ken, heed what Superdad's telling you. If you do indeed have friends in the US. Have the parcel sent to them. Have them rewrap and sent to you. The key is how they mark the contents. Simply mark "fishing gear" but most importantly "gift". I get packages about 3-4 times a week from the US, the duty is nuts! Not to mention, and here's the one you got to watch...brokerage fees....Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice guys. As luck would have it, my cousins brother in-law is coming down next month from Michigan which has a Cabela's. Woo-hoo! Now my only problem is deciding which reel to buy. I'll probably take Superdad's advice as usual and forego the LCD line counter Abu reel (but it's so shiny and purdy....droool) and go with the Daiwa which I believe is Targa2's choice of reel. Hey, if it's good enough for him right? The Rhino and Cabela's reels also had me thinking about value. Anyone with any experience with these?

Ken
