I am thinking of making my first trip to the bay this coming weekend. I have been reading posts but wanted to ask some specific questions that I hope someone could help me out with.

-I don't own a boat so I am wondering what place I should rent from that is closest to the most producing spots right now?
-I see a lot of people are running crank baits, what about just drifting big minnows on jigs or lindy rigs? will this produce? I have never tried trolling crank baits before, more of a spinner bait or jig person.
-Is this water to big to take on in a day with no experience of it? Is it easy to find a few places to jig and drift and have the potential of catching some big ones? and where might these spots be?

It would be much appreciated, just wanted to give it a try. I was up in thunderbay last weekend and caught a ton of huge ones and now I am hooked like never before. However, we were just jigging in 20 feet of water, it seems to me this bay needs a different strategy...

Thanks

I'm in the same boat (pardon the pun). I'm coming this weekend for the first time. I have a 19' Legend XCalibur and I hope it's big enough for the bay, is it? I've bought some planer boards and am ready to give them a go with some reef runners......I was planning on heading towards Adolphus Reach...I've read the message board but there's a lot of language being thrown around that is beyond me like "the gap" and "bonnet" and the "ferry" and i would appreciate some translation....

Agree with landshark. Some people made some posts saying the big girls were in the reach and stirred up a frenzy. There's fish there but in my opinion not lake fish. Bonnett is near wellington on lake ontario. The gap is at the end of adolphus reach by amherst island. Water temps are too high for migratory eyes to be in bay so you have to get out near deeper water. The ferry is the glenora ferry which is the division of adolphus reach and bay of quinte in terms of the regs. Ie east of ferry you can run 2 lines per person, west of is just one line. Your boat is fine unless its like this weekend...

Big Mac just nailed it, wait a couple weeks or head out in the big lake, dont be fooled with big fish pics that they are being caught in the bay in numbers

How deep and where? Should I be using planer boards on the lake?

I am still fishing with clients out in Lake Ontario until mid to late October, not many fish have moved into the Bay Area yet and with the strong North winds this past weekend, it looks like most of the walleye and bait may have pushed out even further into the lake. Once the bait starts to move into the bay the walleye will begin to show up.

Follow my facebook page for on the water reports, you will notice once I start to move into the Bay. Every fall I follow the fish in as the bite just stops out on Lake Ontario.

Good luck and all the best this fall on Quinte...
