I know this topic has been on this board before, but I can't seem to find exact info anywhere on what the trolling plate will slow my boat down to. I have a 16' aluminum, with a 40 horse 4 stroke that will only troll down to 3.1 mph. I realize that the speed may vary from boat to boat, but a rough idea would be much appreciated. I've pretty much decided that I'm going to get one, but it would be nice to know some rough numbers about speed. Does anyone have a similar boat to mine with a trolling plate?? I use my electric most of the time, and have 2 batteries, but if you're going out 3 or 4 days in a row, it's hard to keep up with charging the batteries, especially on rough water days when the motor is working hard.

I have a 1968 16 ft deep v. star craft boat its old and its heavy compaired to the new boats it has a 50 horse evenrude on it and i use a happy troller and can get it down to 1.1 on dead flat water

There's also one called the Easy troller, which is spring loaded (in case you forget) which will spring up by itself. Sounds like either one will work.

17 ft lund 75 four stroke yamaha on flat water 1mph

Just wanted to thank you guys for the advice. I bought and installed the Happy Troller about 3 weeks ago, and finally got out on the water today to try it out. It got me from 3.1 down to 1.4 on flat water. The trolling plate combined with my new fishfinder should at least give me a chance this year at hooking into a decent fish. (I hope) 1 sheep in 3 outings last fall LOL!! I'll be down for 3 days in mid November. Hopefully I'll have something to report.

yup good call walleye 9, i love mine. 3.1 down to 1.1 on flat calm. Be very careful to make sure it latches when you left it up. I had it "catch" last yr and it got jammed 3/4 up, bent the heck out of it when i took off. luckily they come apart easy and it was easy to fix.

i find controlling the boat with the trolling plate down difficult so what i did was drill a three inch hole in it which improved the handeling i also cut another set of notches so i can deploy the plate at a 45 degree angle still slows down the boat and i have good control.

i also have a 16ft alum with a 40 merc 4 stroke the plate took me from 3.2 down to about .9- 1.0 cut a slot to get a little more speed for control found about 1.2 -1.4 worked best in the spring.

Thanks guys, but the plate only got me down to 1.4, so I don't know if I would want to drill holes or anything, than it may get my speed up too high. I wouldn't mind maybe getting my speed up a bit, but don't want 1.7 or higher to be my minimum. If I want to get my speed up, maybe I can drop the electric down to get an extra .3 or .4 It says in the instructions (LOL) not to go over 1200 rpm. with the plate down. I'm at 1000 rpm at my lowest level, so using my throttle seems to be out of the question for gaining speed.

I find raising my motor gives me a .2 boost in speed. That said I go over 1200rpm all the time...
