Evening Bite

Seems to me everyone hits the water at first light and is off the water no later than 3. I read some old posts about fishing after dark and the declining results due to zebra mussels and I get that but I guess the question is more about fishing the 3 til dark shift.
Is this a productive time or would it be better to fish mid day. Assuming you can't make it for first light.

Some are uncomfortable about fishing after dark in winter, as I am if fishing alone in the boat (from a personal safety perspective). With a buddy, no problem. As to effectiveness....have not done it often enough to really have an opinion.

Interested to see the opinions of others better placed.

works good casting to weedbeds in 5-10fow with stickbaits

For many many years, after work, I used to trailer my boat to Picton and launch at 5pm then fish till 1 or 2 am. Some of my best memories are of night fishing both casting and trolling with the electirc motor. my fav bait was a black and silv/orange smithwick rogue and the orange jointed fastrac. The fish would just hammer the baits and many times just about rip it from your arms. Slow presentation was key, when you felt like you were reeling in too slow it still wasnt slow enough. make sure you have all your safety equipment and especially key is the flood light and a bag of salt/sand for the ramp

Good comments so far but I was thinking more about the before dark evening fishing. Fish for 3 hrs and coming in just after sundown sorta thing.

I may give the after dark fishing a try a little later though.

Very good question.

3 different time periods.

1) dawn to mid afternoon - open water trolling or jigging

2) late afternoon into the early evening - jigging and casting cranks. if you want to troll with cranks & body baits move up onto the shoals and into the rivers.

3) night fishing - throwing cranks off pier heads, shoreline, and trolling the rivers with sticks.

Night time river fishing is probably my favorite all time technique. Living in the Trenton area for 15 years helped me hone my skills with this technique. Literally thousands of hours on the Trent night & day. So bad 1 year that I went to the doctor with this strange feeling in my face in the mornings. Turned out that it was frost bite.

Later when I moved to Picton, I found Picton Bay in the fall at night was probably 1 of the 3 best locations on Quinte to get your personal best. I was there the night Izumi did his back in the 90s. If memory serves me correctly, I caught 14 eyes that night, 12 were over 11 pounds and were released and I kept 2 that were under 8 lbs. Took me over 3 hours to get the 2 smaller ones for the table.

Hot baits - Rapala or Youzuri sticks in the river. Casting jointed cranks at night with a little white on the lure & a rattle does hurt some times.

Just before dark those eyes will be headed for the shoals to feed, or into river mouths.

Shallower water than the day time.

Thanks for the comments Trannyman. That is very iinteresting information.
My neighbour talks about Izumi being out in the bay after dark. He said it wasn't hard to tell when they had a fish on cause they would hit the lights and light up half the bay !!

Bob was with my Uncle Floyd on that shoot. I have have always fished from around 5pm to around 1 or 2am. We do fairly well and not much boat traffic A nice slow troll or casting weed beds not far from the harbour using Husky Jerks and X raps seem to work for us. Average 4-5 fish per night all around the 10 pound range some smaller some bigger,the biggest being 15pounds caught by my ex boss an a-hole. Hope this helps.

We have fished a couple of hrs after dart and did well trolling boards and shallow runners in shallower water -35-40. fun in late dec -cold like h...
