Hey guys I just joined the forum and also just started getting into the musky fishing. Heading to Moira lake Sunday just wondering if there's any good advice one can give? Brother inlaw bought his first musky gear Friday and landed a 40" for his first musky Monday morn. It hit right beside the boat so it was a quick snap shot and quick release. If I knew how to post a pic i would. Just wanna say thanks to Stacey at pro tackle musky shop for the help as well.

The lake is pretty green with it's annual algae bloom right now. I was there last week and the west side of the lake was really ugly. That being said, i don't think the fish care if the timing is right. You might want to have brighter colour lures. Water is lower than normal and there are more and bigger weed beds than last year. Fish the red jugs almost straight out from the launch, that is " Ross's Bar" and many large fish have been caught there. Another good area is the south side of the big island. Giant weedbed there with a nice deep weedline.Don't overlook that small shallow area that goes under the highway i caught a 48 incher there a few summers back. Now you are new to muskie fishing, so it's important that you have the right release tools. A large net or cradle is a must... as well as a good set of hook cutters, pliers and jaw spreaders. The muskie in this lake naturally reproduce so it is imperative that all precautions are taken to release fish quickly. Have a camera ready to go and make sure your partner knows how to use it.
Good luck

Yep got all the release tools nessasay. I have done alot of reading and have invested more into the release aspect than anything else. I understand that the release is the most important part. All geared up and tring for a big boy. Thanks for the help.

Good luck on Sunday. Stock up on extra 5/0 trebels and you'll be glad you did. If you get a ski hooked deep or awkwardly you can quickly cut the eyes on the hooks, get the bait out of the way and more easily remove the hooks. Better for the fish and safer for you. Pop some new hooks back on and your favorite bait is back in the game. 8) Once you get your first one you'll be addicted and you can join the rest of us in the muskie nuthouse.

ALL OTHER FISH ARE JUST BAIT!

Once you get into them...hunting the hunter will be your new passion. You will just want to catch more and bigger muskies. WARNING!!!! You will get haunted and will never forget the big one that gets away. When you start waking up in the middle of the night screaming GET THE NET! you are wrecked.

Muskies are the most illusive Fresh water predator fish. The challenge is endless and the rush is amazing... if you can hold on. Have patience...you may need it.

If you need further help on the lake, i can draw you a map with some good spots. I have been fishing it for over 20 years. There are some decent muskies on the lake. The smaller side is definitely the easier side to fish. Fish all the bays and rock points and keep the boat in at lest 8-15 feet of water or deeper and cast to the second tier weeds (the weeds that you don,t see on the surface) It is a great lake.

See you on the water.

Well it's official I bagged my first ski. Came up outta the water and just anialated my top water. He was only 35 inches but that was it was Awsome. The reward I got from spending all day out there with only one early morning strike and having him hit at around 2pm was unbelievable. Got him in the boat with a quick pic and measure and he was gone as soon as we set him back in the water. We fished Moira till bout noon and desired to head down to the bay. On our way through stopped at protackle and took some good advice which landed me my first. Thanks to everyone who responded here I'm hooked. Good luck out there. I would like to post a pic but I'm a bit of a forum noobie and don't know how. If someone could let me know that would be great. BTW we went Saturday. 8)

Thanks Jeff

Great work Jeff, congrats on your first muskie. Topwater to boot, too awsome. 8)

Keep putting in the work, cause no matter how long you go between fish, when you land the next one it makes it all worth it. Thanks for practicing CPR, Catch-Photo-Release. Looking forward to seeing a pic.

First of all....Congrats on your first Muskie!!!! Just wondering if you caught it in Moira, or the Bay??? Says you caught it at 2 pm, but only fished till noon on Moira, and then headed to the Bay.

Thanks
