I purchased my first flasher last year an ice55. I don't have much experience with them. So my question is who do u tell when a fish comes in hugging the bottom. I know how go tell when they r off bottom put when they are tight to the bottom do u watch for a change in the colors of the bottom?Or by the depth changing slightly? I wAs out on Saturday on the bay of quinte using and the bottom was always showing orange or red but every now and then I would watch the depth change slightly and I know the depth is truly changeing so I didn't know if that was a fish possibly hugging the bottom or Not. I'm just trying to shorten the learning curve and be able to use it to it's fullest only get out ice fishing a hand full of times a year and at my rate it would take me forever to figure this thing out. Lol. Any pointers in the right direction would be good.
Thanks.
Shawn

you should have a mark established that you know is bottom. if that mark starts to lift or flicker then its showtime. maybe you can see it in the poor video i shot a couple years ago with my cellphone http://s42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ ... -30-18.mp4

Your on the right track Shawn. Like Landshark said find your true bottom and watch for lift or flicker in your colors. What i do is drop my jig until it looks like it is on bottom on the flasher. Now make sure it is on bottom and take note of how much further it went down. Pull it up a couple of inches and give it a good wiggle and look for it on the flasher. Now you know were the true bottom is and if you see the color change on the flasher or a light lifting off bottom it is game on. Sometimes your color will be a little yellow, orange, then red and that is showing you a soft bottom then rock. I have watched Walleye on my Marcum underwater camera swim so close to the bottom that there tails will stir up that silt so when you see your bottom on the flasher go from say orange to Red that is a fish and your flasher is showing you the difference in density, thus the color change. I can usually tell roughly how thick the silt is on bottom or if it is a hard bottom by the color on the flasher. I have noticed that when they are cruising your hole you will see a slight rise in the depth then it will drop back down and this is very useful when you are fishing a soft bottom so keep an eye on it. The more you play with it the better you will understand it so keep at it and it will be your best friend on the Ice.

Shawn,

If your looking to see fish right on bottom, first make sure you are using the smallest cone angle available to you.

When there is a Walleye with its belly on the bottom, the bottom line will all of a sudden get thicker. Then it will flicker, then the bottom rises up and you get a thick read line coming up to you lure.

Then, wham, fish on.

Well, that's what you see on a Vexilar. LOL

Its something that takes time to master , but since you have the 55 it has the target line you can move the target line to the bottom, anything steps over that line you know its a fish!

Smitty,

A target line, what that heck is that? I don't have that setting on my flasher.

Oh Crap, that's because I have a Vexilar. lol

I do have an on/off switch though,

The Ice 55 is a great unit....click your colour mode a couple times and make sure all 6 colours are in the display....great target separation. I like the zoom feature as well.

Vexilar users are known to go deaf over prolonged periods of usage....it's a shame really and I own an FL-22 HD. Never really use it after I bought an Ice 55 if anyone wants it?

With practice you'll become a pro, no doubt!
