buckflash,i'm amased at how little responce this thread actually produced,
i had hoped to create a meaningful dialog with fishermen, natives, commercial harvestors, that i'm surt lurk on all the fishing web sights,to aquire info on whats bitting where.
these sight are a great sourse of info designed to help fishermen, help fishermen, but if you think about it ,if you were a commercial fisherman would you not check out these sights lurking for info on what species to target at what time of year,or even day?

I agree about the absence of posts regarding this very real concern. One might sugest that the reason for ths is the fact that it is not in the BOQ. This being the BOQ main discssion board (to the best of my knowledge), has a fairly focused thread, and is in an historicaly very reserved/conservative area.

That said.....I will open up a thought that I would appreciate some responces about (from more people). Please read.

Getting rid of gill nets in BOQ. Do you agree?

This would cover both commercial, illegal and native nets. Buyouts and pullouts would be the method with a budget allotment from MNR and/or private money/trusts etc. (read about the Texas group that buys out shrimp nets as a non profit "direct action" group).

There is substantial support for this in many many quarters (and yes I am being all inclusive). What it takes is solid, creative, strong leadership. Thst is it in a nutshell. You wanted an opinion. The sun weathered elder has given you one....

ODG, I agree with getting rid of commercial and illegal netting in BOQ. However I suspect legal native netting is another thing as they have some sort of treaty right to the fishery. Managing those that step outside these treaty boundaries, if they are or can be specifically defined to everyone's satisfaction, could also be an issue.

Apologies for neglecting the fact that there are some oustdning live release or impoundment gear. This could help smooth out any rough edges, grandfather in anyone that is reluctant. (PS. It has been done in a number of places....the $ cost relative to the $ return via tourism, goodwill, etc.....is not trully quantifiable in my books. Thanks for replaying.

Any others? (remember 1 letter equals 10 votes, and one reply likley coincides with 3 votes) Silly trivia from a dottering "sunny attititude" dweller.

PS. With 2 local MPPs, one local MP being Liberal, with a Liberal gov't at both levels....this is all a question of presentation and negotiation to make it happen. Having the right people involved is a separate and still very important part of the equation to be successful. There are many factors....none of which are impossible situations.....all are just made for leaders with iniative, tact and want to do something "out of the proverbial box" (the last part is always a tough one with carrer beaurocrats...."hurry up and wait as their battle cry is unacceptable)

I admire your intent. I trully do and agree........but

The current set of conditions across the province of Ont. will not see that happen. However logical it may be....this is not in the cards in the forseeable future.

There is however, some unique regional opportunities with the right staff, politicans involved. (These are very few and far between regarding the opporunities). All sectors including native, commercial and rec. angling interests have to be met in some fashion.

Supportable options, realistic alternatives must be, and are the only course of action worth requesting pursuing imo. that will produce results. Momentum, timing, policy and politics all come into play (I know young man....it sucks).

Going full circle now.... there remains an opportunity (the only viable one imo) for a sharp, well thought out removal of 99.9% of all gill nets in BOQ.

The support of the public in all quarters appear to be there. The backbone or push to secure any result is leadership that has the street wherewithall, business background, relationships with all sectors to make it happen.

This is not a style of leadership, person that one will find within most beaurocratic rank and file staff. They are there but most become way too frazzled........

Estimated time imo to plan and make it in the realm of possibility- 1.5-2yrs.
* cost- staff, operation - $300,000 - 450,000+ (inclusive of travel, public meetings, support material, advertisements, etc.); this is assuming that it is in the realm of possibility to have an independent (totally) that can handpick at least 3 MNR staff (1 tech, 1 bio, outside support staff; not included in budget)
* revised cost of actual implementation- $2,000,000 - this is for buyouts on a number of fronts; it must be attractive to buy or grandfather any commercial, native commercial gill nets; live release or impoundment gear is the only thing that should be allowed in a small body of water/ medium sized ecosystem like BOQ.
** Contingency fund- $300,000- this is litsed to cover any unforseen expences given that anyone capeable would expect silent but real resistence and might have something unforeseen. In a perfect world....I would personally have it publically donated back to local resource, grassroots groups on behalf of the taxpayer, angling public. Hopefully this would not be needed....but I fully imagine it would come into play.

This was an interesting thread. Thanks to the person that began to question, as to why no one responded. I encourage comments, both good and bad.

My part here is complete for now.

PS.
If one was told that there was no money....that is not quite correct. The options are endless for those that have the will and related support. Partnering could offset 25-50% with the rest being regarded as a cheap cash infusion given some of the projects, methods tackled in the past.
