Hooked up the boat and made the long trek out to Athol Bay with Tim (Tylercurt) this morning. Neither of us had ever fished browns before so we thought we would give it a shot before the walleye season opened. Made a 4 rod rig and figured this was a great way to test it out. Ran boards with varying lengths of line out the back. Tried cleos, husky's, J11's. and a clacking minnow.

Within 20 minutes of wet lines the first board fires but it was lost after a couple cranks of the handle. 10 minutes later another hit. This one hit a gold, orange and black husky on lead core about 60 feet behind the board in 20 feet of water. Tim took the board off, line went slack so he thought the fish was off, he hooked the board back on and tossed it out. To our surprise the fish was not gone, started pulling again once the board got about 15 feet from the boat. I think he just wanted practice with unhooking boards for saturday. Ends up being an 8.3 lb fish.

Hours pass with no action, until we make a tight turn that stalled the inside boards. Shortly after tension got back on the line the board disappeared under water. Reeled it in and noticed that there was a fish on once the board got close to the boat. Couldn't feel the weight with the board under water. Tim gets on the rod and brings in a nice 3.1 lb brown. This was on a black and silver J11 on mono 150 back from the board in about 20 fow.

A couple rookie brown trout fisherman, fumbling around out there, but we managed two PB's so it was a nice day on the water.

Well done guys - nothing like a good "Brownie" shakedown trip prior to Walleye season - gets the itch scratched - LOL.

Nice job,
After seeing all the brown reports here this spring I am going to have to make a commitment to try it next year. I intended to this year but it just seems that something else always come up. Not next year! WTg guys

Personal Bests are always a good thing - congrats and welcome to Brown Trout fishery of eastern Lake Ont.

Good job - thanks for sharing.

That's a neat setup you have for your boat for the rod holders.

great setup.

great fish.

great job.

I'm so happy to see all the new anglers experiencing what fun brown trout can be.

The more anglers that fish, and respect them, the more chance we have of having the MNR tighten down on killing / de-egging them for roe.

Awesome guys!!! Was going to try for Browns for the first time also this year, after reading all the reports in the last month or so, but never made it out. Will definitely try next year for sure. Love that setup for the rod holders.
