Was out to fish Saturday AM with my Dad and we trolled in Thompson Cove with Uzicks and Worms, tried 12 feet (too weedy), then out to 13, 14,15,16 and out to the Red Ball marker. LOTS of baitfish and lots of fish around them feeding.
Decided to try trolling crankbaits as we could see boats shifting positions and locations.
Trolled in the 35-40 foot depths and heading to Shermans, the reel screamed. The fish took 40 feet of linr before we it under control - my Dad brought the fish in and I slipped the net under a 13 lb sheepie..... Still it's a fish. Back to shore around noon.
Sunday was a bright and windless morning so we headed back to Long Reach to try the cranks again and look for fish. We found them over at Grandfathers Cove and along that shore towards the cement plant. On our first pass the reel screamed and I was able to land a 6lb sheepie. We were over fish, perhaps not the targetted species, but what the heck!!!!!
Second pass the rod bent over and Bert took the rod and then nothing---- The lure was gone - suspect Mr Pike......
We trolled until noon with tow other strikes, one of which I got to within 18 feet of the boat and then a headshake (or body Shake) and gone. The middle hook had a scale on it, looked like a sheepie. The other strike was a long line release.
We were getting our strikes on TD9 Tail Dancers running around 12 feet down.
Back to shore at noon as the heat was rising and it was time to go.
The word around is that the eyes are scarce, probably due to the abundance of baitfish and some reports had one, two but the norm was a skunk.
Can't get any worse - stay tuned til next weekend.
