It's about time my poor old canoe got a new matte camo coat of paint. I'm thinking of using the marine grade primer and the camo paint kit from Canadian Tire, but thinking I want something better that will take the abuse I give it.
Has anyone found a really good paint to use that will last another 20 years of neglect and abuse?

If you dont mind a ruff finish, any kind of bed liner will work well, and they come in many many colours.

It's going to be a rough finish anyway. I think there are more patches than original fiberglass. If I sanded it smooth, there would be no bottom on it. I tried a bed liner on it last year and it worked ok, but it never lasted a year before it started to peel up.
I sprayed the marine primer last night, and now looking for a camo paint with adventure proof toughness.

I should just go get a new one, but this canoe is like part of my skin now. Way too many memories with it. I hope to be buried in it someday.

I did mine in Krylon Camo paint in rattle cans (Crappy tire sells it). This paint has a very low emissivity, etc like they use for decoy paint. I used some leaves from sumac trees and just held them by hand on the canoe and sprayed over. With three colors it looks really good.

I would take a picture of it to show you but now I can't find it.

I didn't use any primer on mine and it is holding up fine. If you really need to prime it then I would use a grey automotive primer or tremclad primer. If you really want to seal up the surface then I would use regular gloss or semi-gloss tremclad and camo over it. Keep the camo paint thin and it won't peel.

Well I finished up the paint tonight. I used the marine primer inside and out, then went through 8 cans of ultra matte spray paint to come up with this. I liked the idea of the leaves, so I used oak, ash rosebush, fern and dead branches to make the patterns. I almost don't want to take it out anymore.
Now I need a super durable clear coat with zero shine.

Thanks guys. It took about 10 days in total, mostly trying to find the time and $100 in paint. Hmmm...hope my wife doesn't see that. Anyway, the new patches and sanding time took about 6 hours and the painting time took about 10 hours to complete.
