what is the Best salmon fishing spot in bellville ontario and when does the season begin ?

From shore or boat? From shore would be the Moira downtown. When is a good question.. Will be soon!

From shore .. thanks for the tip.. btw... apart from the fishing permit .. are there any other restrictions like from what time to what time or a specific place along the river ?

I'm not aware of any restrictions outside of the regular fishing regs. It wont be long just check the Moira periodically. You will se others fishing when they are there. Good luck!

Don't mean to rain on your parade or paint all those on the river with the same brush, but there is more snagging in the fall than fishing. I just find it vile to see people ripping lures thru the water that are rigged with over-sized treble hooks in an effort to land fish that are in the final stages of their life cycle. Many of the salmon in the river have turned near black with white patches and look almost grotesque, not the same majestic kings they were only weeks previous in the big lake. Cannot even fathom them as table fare as the flesh is literally decomposing. Big fish in shallow water seems to bring out worst in some people. More important is that impressionable young kids see this and presume it is alright to snag fish when they see adults doing it. The fall is a great time of year for near -shore fishing with a multitude of species available within a casting distance. Keep an eye on the postings on this board and some of the guys/gals may share some of the opportunities available to you. For a start, Meyers Pier is productive for fall walleye and pike. From the gist of your post I,m presuming you are either new to the area and/or newto the sport. Hope this of some assistance and trust others will log in to get you off on the right track. Its no different than us guys in boats getting them while they are staging. (I mean sport fishing in the rivers not snagging)

As per my original post, I was not painting everyone with the same brush and mean no disrespect to those who legitmately attempt to land one. Yet snagging is rampant below the first dam and has seemed to gain acceptance by some with the excuse that the fish are going to die anyway. By no means did I want the posting to be confrontational, only to point out that there are many opportunities in the area for fall shore fishing and that new anglers may not be aware of. Only attempting to be helpfull as opposed to finger pointing. Bruce

I've heard they don't eat after they enter the rivers to spawn - any truth to that?

As a kid and growing up near the Napanee Rivers - Spring Side Park, I fished in the fall for salmon as much as possible.

For sure I snagged a ton of salmon by accident with roe bags but I also caught a ton of them on lures too that hit spinners, spoons etc. Albeit, these were usually the smaller jacks or trout but a lot of fun and the best memories I had growing up.

It kept me away from doing things that I shouldn't and out of trouble in what then was a town void of anything for younger people.

So re: eat after they enter rivers? In my opinion, I'd think most will say they don't but from my experience, they do.

I'd say they do it they wouldn't bite a lure or bait lol.

Most mature kings quit feeding around the 1st week of August. The drive to find the natal rivers and streams where they were born or imprinted to, takes over. They pay virtual no attention to the water temperature, if they did they would not enter the rivers that are between 60 and 75 degrees F. They don't need to feed because they bulked up during the spring and summer and will spawn and die in a few months. The last few months they are a eating machine, basically putting on one pound a week.

Most kings are loosing weight and body mass now. They hit lures basically from instinct.

Lets "reel" this topic in. Back to the original question, Belleville basically has 1 hole right below the East side of the dam, there are other areas like the trench along the bank a ways down, but basically, the "hole" has all the fish. I have caught many there on spawn sacks and little cleos, both Coho and chinook. The only problem is that there will be lots of people fishing that same tiny little hole, so its a problem getting a spot.

The trent used to be much better and more room, although i hear they have closed access to the dam itself, but the shore is great. I used to wade out on the West side across the creek there and to the edge of the drop off when the current wasn't high... but you gotta be real careful around there. You can not only catch chinooks, coho and the odd pink, but lakers, whitefish and browns... then rainbows later in the year when it gets cold.

Farther W, is shelter valley creek with lots of fish and private property, then Barnemhouse creek. But Ganaraska is the best of them all.
