Sitting around thinking about fishing (another tournament weekend coming up) and I get a call from Trannyman1, thinking about fishing Port Hope for the last couple of days for the GOSD tourney, he asks if i'm interested in going?

Certainly! Count me in.

So Trannyman, Rocketman and myself head out for the last kick at the qualifying can for Mike and I at least.

We launch Friday afternoon around 4 and fished till dark with good success, caught alot of fish but nothing to put us into the top ten.

Saturday Morning we're on the boat for 5am and are hard at the fishing by 6am. Within a 15 minutes we have our first fish locked, still not what we're looking for. It's quiet for a while then bang fish on, down-rigger goes off and Mike is fighting a good one when bang the wire goes off, I grab it and we have a double, both strong fish. I let the fish run takes around 300 feet and then becomes a log, Mike has his fish making it's way to the boat, once landed, measured and released I start the retrieve on the wire rod, a long drawn out battle, had it once within a 100 feet and then it decides he's not ready and away he goes on another 300 foot run. After 40 minutes we bring it to the boat and I'm backing away and Al is on the net, when I hear Mike say Gene it's a good fish and then Al also says yep it's a good fish, I'm $hitting myself, Al bring it over the transom I gotta see it. Well it is a pig, we scale it at 32.15 and it measures 42 long. My first Lake Ontario Tyee. I couldn't of been more pleased.

We box that baby and fish about another hour before heading into the scales ends up 32.30 and qualifies me in 6th place for the week, so far!!!! We fished the rest of the day with great success and me wondering with the hundreds of others out there trying to get their shot and the contest open till 8pm would it stick. Well it did, finished 6th for the week and got big fish of the day. I'm following Al to the Big Show.

Again I like to make a point of Thanking AL, this guy knows his stuff, like nobody else. He's been a great mentor/teacher when it comes to the Salmon game. I can't tell you how much I've learned and how much I have appreciated his guidance. Thanks Bud!!!!

A second shout-out goes out to Mike Caine (aka Rocketman), owner and creator of M.C. Rockets the greatest artificial Salmon bait there is. These things catch fish, no question about it. Mike's fine tuning of the presentations certainly made a difference. Thanks Mike!

So here's the picture of one old fat guy, with his first Lake Ontario Piggy!

Wish me luck on Sept.15th.

Hey Mike that is a tool bag and you know from Oswego how well they work, LOL!

Great fish and report. Al is amazing and a wealth of knowledge. Which of the 8 tools on your hip was best for hook removal?

Funny thing Mike, I forgot to to add the tool bag thing and was re-editing when you posted. Reread the post and you'll see my response, LOL! The Biggest one in the bag of course!

Congrats on the Tyee Gene, you guys put in a lot of hours in the boat this summer and you deserve it.

Hope you and Al find more like that one on the 15th.

Bruce

Nice job Gene thats a great fish. We were in Port hope saturday afternoon / night and got skunked! I only saw one other boat catch a fish while we were out. I should have just followed you guys around I guess. :) I was wondering about the tools too. You are certainly prepared!

Gotta luv the smile.

Rocketman had the hot set ups all weekend. Of coarse most or the kings were caught on M. C. Rockets. We went 6 for 8 or 9 friday evening.

Saturday I think over a dozen and a good number of 27 to 29 lbs. Speed was mostly 2.2 to 2.3 down speed but the big king hit at 3.0 mph as the starboard rigger was out of the water and it was part of a double.

The hot Rockets were #24 mag. and #1 regular size.

Gene's 32.20 was the 4th Tyee this summer. Chuck (Grizz) with a 30.12, Ian with a 30.56 (second largest king of the Tightline's Shootout tourney) and my 32.98 in week 5 of the GOSD. 3 on Rockets and the first on an ATOMMIK shreded Hammer fly.

Later
Al
