I have 16' Smoker Craft allumum. The transom seems quite flimsy, and I suspect the wood sandwiched between the transom alluminum is rotted... Anybody ever attempted to replace this wood?? I wanna give it a go, but a bit nervous.. Any help would be appreciated.

I've never tried an aluminum boat but I did on a 18ft Bayliner. Replace floor / stringers / transom. Took the motor and drive off / pulled the whole top off at the rub rail. Laminated everything with glass. I'm not sure where to start with an aluminum boat though. I'd think laminate some pressure treated plywood and glass it all around to seal it.

There is almost every "how to video" going on Youtube. Just type in transom replacement and there is 365 to choose from.

wood transoms are replaced every day,just take the old one out and replace with new,no trick or special way(that ive ever done)the only thing i do is caulk all the holes with waterproof silicone and paint the new transon,just helps seal the bolts or screws when replacing them n painting the new transom just helps seal it a little from the elements......

seems the wood has actually delaminated between the alluminum and that combined with the rot/wet is making very difficult to remove.

I replaced mine in a 17foot sea nymph years ago hardest part was getting the old one out. Use pressure treated plywood and end cut preservative marine grade silicone on all bolts and holes.

Thanks Skeet! was gonna get marine grade plywood, and PL premium, but may consider the PT ply... I agree, the hardest part is getting all that old crap out.

My first post, lol trying to help a guy, ....under no circumstances should you use press. Treated wood, or carpenters glue ., epoxy resin will trap the gasses that the green wood contains and will delaminate in quick fashion. , the wood glue that you are talking about will delaminate with epoxy or polyester resins, A quality exterior sanded plywood will work as well as marine plywoodif the pieces are encapsulated in resin before laminated with cloth. You will get best results and service from using 3 equal panels sandwiched together, with epoxy resin and cloth., Just do some more homework before you start. An alum boat is the easiest to fix for a novice. Try screamnfly.com or bbc.com , for tips. They both have extensive forums that you can read and learn.
