As long as you don't mind cranking they work just fine. I have a old Cannon and it works great. If you are using them alot and are trying to get real deep the cranking would get old I'm sure.

I have both Canon and Scotty and for the few times a year I get out they work great, but ditto on what rtkman said. If I had to choose, I prefer the Scotty style.

I had Big Jon manual's and "up graded" to Scotty manual's this year. The scotty's spool horizontal vs. vertical, I never liked the way scotty's looked but they are far superior to the big jon's. I have a smaller boat for fishing salmon on Lake O. and did not want the weight of extra batteries for electrics. I would recommend scotty's for easy operation and reliability.

I'm learning something here too. I would have thought the horizontal spool would be a pain. Good to know.

I have two Canons (i think 'Lake troll'), one electric, one manual and I prefer the manual. The manual can be raised and lowered in less than 1/3 the time of the electric takes. Now if you are fishing alone then the electric would have it's advantages.

I also have some small Big Jons ("Runabout") and the small spool is a pain, lots of cranking. Go for larger spools if you choose manual.

I have used Scotty riggers, my friends have the 1 foot/crank and I have the 2 foot/crank, invest the extra $10 and get the 2 foot/crank. We have caught a lot of fish on them this year and they are easy to use. I also fish alone sometimes and it does take a bit to keep the boat straight but my co-pilot (bungee cord on the steering wheel) helps
