I was fishing on the upper Ganaraska the other day and had a big chinook salmon on.While going down river to land my fish there was another fisherman in the water,I informed him my fish was comin down,he got out of the way and I landed my fish. While walking back to the pool I was fishing, I said hi to a guy sittting on the rocks talking on his cell.Nice friendly guy ,mid to late twenties, ripped jeans ,tattered plaid shirt. He asked me if the guy (BUBBLEHEAD HE CALLED HIM) same guy I had just guided my fish around, had been there long.I said maybe half an hour, why do you ask? Because ,him and his group of four...two guys two girls, are not using their rods, just their net and IM A GAME WARDEN .Really I SAY....never of known, you sure blend in well! He laughs and says they broke their net before they managed to catch a fish so he's just waiting and watching. He then gets a another phone call so I carry on up river,...the group goes further up ,changes to giant cleos and catches some fish,,,,then the warden reappears, with two Port Hope cops and busts them all for their activities plus liquor violations I think ....looked like they were taking all their gear as well......He sure looked like a guy just sitting on a rock just talking on his cell....guess you never know...glad to see my tax dollar hard at work....as for poaching salmon ....so easy to catch legally this time of year....lighter leader, good sinker placement, float, fly and a good rod, have caught over forty or fifty plus two small cohoes and three nice bows...seems harder to fish with just a net...plus more expensive Im sure! Just thought Id share that.

IT was a gong show last Saturday. I got there early and it was good. Landed a nice male on the fly and broke a few off. But by lunch it was happy hour.

Nice story. Just goes to show you all the rivers should be off limits this time of year.

Guess you can whine about anything, personally I follow the rules of the MNR and comments like yours Fred are just ill-informed white noise.....the number of kids that I see leaning to fish on Ontario tributaries for Salmon and Browns and Bows in the fall ,and Bows in the spring make having them open well worth it....they gather around and ask questions when yoiu legally land these fish, its how they learn to fish, its how I learned. The major tributaries such as the Saugeen,Port Credit,Ganaraska, the Grand and numerous others are important economic backbones to the communities that have them. They are the starting point for thousands of young fisherman.Plus they dont all have money and boats, nor should they have to,they should just have to follow the rules set out by the MNR,not you or those of similar mindset.Whens the last time a group of kids walked by your boat out on the Bay or Big Lake and asked how to catch them?

"just my opinion maybe i should of kept it to my self"

If you had kept your comments to yourself, there would have been no chance to hear other opinions and possibilities.

This is what makes forums like this great as long as there are no personal attacks.

well to be honest i take kids all the time fishing and show them, so lets just keep this post to the pros and cons of fishing for a spawning fish? why is it ok to fish a trout in a river when spawning but not a walleye, pike, bass?

Probable because the season for trout is open, and the season for walleye, pike and bass are closed when they are spawning.

People do fish for spawning and pre-spawning walleye in the spring ,many walleye dont spawn in the rivers at all and if you paid attention to what I said....it was that the multiple kids fishing the river in Port Hope and eleswhere was a pro ,as are the economic spinoffs... the con is you deciding what Im legally doing is wrong and wanting to close the rivers........as for you I dont care what you do or dont do....point is there are lots of ways to fish for various species in Ontario as defined by the ministry not you

Fair enough......
Reason #1 to your question
Because the rule book says so
Reason #2
On any givin year dependent upon conditions ,spawning walleye are caught,in various locations, rivers , bays ect by various means and various groups.....legally so, with some exceptions(just like salmon and trout rivers in the spring or fall, again with some exceptions ,which reverts back to the intention of my post, which was simply meant to be a funny story about a game warden sitting on a rock, not a condemnation of riverfisherman)

For starters they should ban the use of spawn. That would eliminate idiots from slitting thousands of fish open just to rob them of their eggs! Secondly, maybe they should consider making the Ganny a sanctuary all the way up to 401 at least for the Salmon! I live in Port Hope and the Salmon season just gets worse every year...It's just a killing ground this year!

Just my 2 cents!!

If I lived near the ganny i'd be taking lic plate numbers down and calling the authorities. Its a shame. I don't know how these people can live with themselves.
