We awoke on the 18th to a wet and rainy morning, loaded up the Superdad with our supplies and sleeping gear and headed off in the rain to Picton Bay and a couple day stay at Merland Park.
You may recall that my dad won the early bird draw inthe Kiwanis 2011 Derby for a stay at Merland, with a boat and a guided excursion. The timing has been under going re-arranging since June 2012 and finally the pieces fell into place for the 18-19 & 20 of Sept.
My son was able to arrange his vacation and my dad and I have lots of time......
The boat ride to Picton Bay was wet and foggy inside the boat as we had the side curtains and rear cover all done up to protect us from the rain and the winds. Picton Bay was kinda calm and and the landing was good. We schelpped the luggage and food up to the cottage arranged for us by Kevin and Jennifer and it was a JOY - large and roomy and very cozy.
We had a dram to toast our arrival.
After we dried our selves off and had a bite the skies cleared and we were off to fish Picton Bay, trolled the west side for an hour and my Dad called out - "Fish ON!!!!!" Sure enough the rod bent and Dave netted a nice 19 incher. A good to start off the fishing trip.
The next day we headed to Adolophus Reach, but the west wind made fishing the Keith Shoal impossible, we tried the north side and made three passes from Pull Point to Lyons Island, marked many fish but couldn't attract anything. Motored back to the lee of the west side of Picton Bay where we dragged lures and planer boards around for another couple hours - No Luck.
Later that afternoon, we hit the water again fishing the east and west side of Picton Bay, encountering a number of sailing machines in a competiton, these encounters were close and fairly costly (see my post on my advise about Picton Bay). enough Said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thursday morning we loaded up and headed back to Hay Bay, escaping the east winds, we dippedthe spinners and worms near the Old Church and we hit a pair of walleyes, one of which was close to 16 inches (suffiicient for the table). The winds wer swirling and incrasing and we headed for the dock getting back around 1100.
We had a good time and want to thank Kevin and Jennifer for their hospitality and warm welcome - we look forward to Sept 2013 for a repeat visit.
My Dad and I got back fishing on Sat the 29th, headed for Long Reach, we saw the charters plying the waters, we trolled cranks off the west shore over a ton of fish with very tight mouths. Nothing happening at all. Moving back to Hay Bay we trolled some places looking for fish - found them but they were close mouthed also.
Sunday we went out for a short while to explore some other areas looking for fish, found them again but they wouldn't take our cranks at all.
Water temp was atround 62-63 degs F on both days.
We'll be back - stay Tuned

Waiting for the water to cool off.
