Quinte Fishing

This past Friday and Saturday I was fortunate enough to spend a couple days on my favourite fall location - Quinte.

I knew it was early, but fish are always being caught, and some big girls too!

We made it up early Friday morning, leaving Hammertown at 4am sharp. We started up by the gap, but couldn't get a pattern together, so we headed west towards the lighthouse. Getting word that the fish were up high, we set a medium diver back 100' on the board. It was the ticket. The board started screaming back, at full chinook speed. That only means one thing - sheeper.



I was running some lighter tackle this time to go along with my 9' Clarus rods. This 8'3" Compre trolling rod was being tested. So were the Mustad Triple Grip hooks, which really aren't that "stout" so to speak. Nothing sticks more fish, but certainly aren't the best choice for fish of this size.

Really thought we had something special starting. Unfortunately we didn't catch another sheeper until evening infront of the cement plant. It was caught reeling in a jointed bomber long A on 2 colour core...

However, we did keep busy with the "bi-catch".



Was able to bring home five nice walleye between 24" and 25". Perfect eaters.

Saturday we were excited. Early to arrive we found the 'shark and grateful fisher already there. Launched and awaited the 7:30 start time. Winds were building so we headed directly to the reach at 7:30....started fishing around 8am, and had a fish on before the spread was out.



Not what we were after, so we tossed 'er back and kept at 'er.

Dad was next up, but again, more gold.



We went on a lull for a while until I brought in another walleye on the 5 colour / spoon combo. To this point, all fish had come on the long lines, and none on the cores.

We worked the water the best we could until we were relagated to picton harbour where we attempted to drift some spinners ... no luck there either...

It wasn't our year for drum, but we kept busy with the gold, and are having a big fish fry tomorrow eve with my family and friends. Can't beat that!

But most importantly, thanks Landshark for putting this all together again this year. It was tough conditions, but we stuck it out cause you put it together. I understand the locals, who have tons of opportunity to fish quinte, will pick better days, however, we had boats there from Hamilton to Ottawa to Montreal!
