I would recommend Abu Garcia Ambassadeur bait caster reels. I use a 6000C and a 6500UC. In my opinion, the Ultra Cast is worth the few extra dollars. I would use PowerPro 50 pound test line, this is the diameter of 12 pound test mono, and a medium heavy rod.
I don't think brand is all that important in rods, unless your spending a big buck. I believe that most of the moderately priced rods come out of the same plants in Korea. The next step up gets you better blanks and hardware, but again if you read the specs, they all use the same blanks. I would shop for a sale price on a brand name. During the winter I was able to purchase several +$100 U.S. rods for $30 each, because they were old stock. The new rods were a "signature model" and the store was clearing the older non-signature ones.
If money is no object, St.Croix and G.Loomis are the top names.

I run the Musky/Pike Shop just north of Belleville and Charter muskies 4-5 Times a week in season.

The 6500 C3 Abu Garcia reels are very simple and easy to use casting or trolling. They are also priced right. you could get away with the 5500C3 reel but it has smaller line capacity for the larger line diameters.

Power Pro is definitely the BEST line on the Market with its thinner Diameter and un-matched abrasion resistance. Recommended Line size is No less 65lb Power pro for overall strenght and long life. You could get away with 50lb but its to thin for Trolling when you need the strength incase you snag bottom.

As far as rods go.... ST. Croix and G loomis are the best but you do pay a bit more for the quality and performance. You wont be disappointed with one of these rods.

I use and sell St. Croix rods. One of the best around rods are the 6'6" Med Heavy Premier Series that can cast just about anything without fatigue after a long day.(price is ok) The 7'2" is a softer/lighter Med heavy Casting rod that is excellent for casting bucktails and cranks with amazing action. (a little more expensive)

IF price is an issue there is a 7' Med Heavy rod designed for Pike/ Walleye that could handle light muskies which is a good price.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

HEY GUYS,

Where do you buy Power Pro Line? How is this line if
you get a professional overrun. I am from the old school,
I have been using Gudebrod Dacron line. I ounce changed
to a super line and got a backlash that made me cut everthing
off the reel and go back to Dacron. 90% of my fishing is casting
so I would like to end up with a good casting line. Hope to
hear from you soon.
