Going into Toronto early Saturday for the Radioworld’s 2012 Ice Fishing Seminar & Sale. Leaving from Kingston, attending seminar then going to BPS and Sail for a look then heading back. Anyone looking to go I am travelling alone so have an open seat if anyone is interested just let me know.
Tim

I'd skip BPS and maybe hit up Sail in Oshawa on your way back. You'll see Sail right at the Stevenson Rd. exit on your way through in the morning on the right hand side. Your looking at close to 3 hours driving one way. The Radioworld seminar is good. Have been there last 2 years.

Walley 9, I was at the 1st seminar a few years ago and I got hooked on ice fishing ever since. Just wondering if Jeff is going to give up a honey hole by accident during his briefing...lol

I went with one of my relatives last year and basically did the same day you are. It was long but fun, with two added places being dinner at the Manadarin I believe it was called and a very quick trip to see the old Maple Leaf Gardens (converted into a grocery store). Have fun and merry Christmas.

Stopped in Belleville and picked up Big Gene and off we went. Arrived early and socialized a bit before they got into the learning. First presenter made the trip, learned that I was using my flasher wrong. He explained what the 3 colors meant, red: center of cone, underneath you, yellow inside the cone and green level but near the outside of the cone (so don’t drop your lure to the green bar…lol). When all was said and done it was a good day and both myself and Gene had more stuff to remember. Headed to BPS, then Sail where we were followed by, Jeff, Joe and Ben….
Oh yeah, Jeff didn't give out any honey holes(DAMIT)...lol

Tim thanks for the ride it was a good day! Can't believe I was at BPS and Sail and came out empty handed at both. A PB for me for sure! Nice to see some of the board guys up there and meet a few I didn't know.

The explanation of the 3 colours was quite simplified at best.
It was based on identical sized fish at the same depth.
It is correct that a fish just entering the outside of the beam will give a weaker return than a fish in the middle of the transducer cone based on the same size of fish. The fish will also appear deeper than the fish in the middle of the cone as it is further from the transducer but still at the same depth as the fish in the middle of the cone.
A fish swimming level through your transducer cone will will appear to raise up as it gets closer to the centre of the cone and drop down as it swims toward the outside of the cone.
The problem is not all fish swim level.
Where the explanation fell short was in the interpretation of what the colours meant.
These transducers have no way of measuring if the return is on the outside or centre of the cone just that it is in the cone. The colours are based on the strength of the returned signal.
The problem here is thay not all fish are the same size.
Depending on how the sensitivity is set it is quite possible for a large fish just entering the edge cone to give a stronger return (red) than a smaller fish in the centre of the cone (green return).
Same principles apply to all multi colour screens (even multiple levels of grayscale) be it flasher or sonar screens as long as only one frequency is being used at the time.
Some sonars have the capability to layer more than one frequency at once on the screen and they can tell you if the fish is in an outside beam & not the narrow beam.
